On a night with southern skies lit up with an electrical firestorm, Fulton, Missouri’s, Gary Blackburn, Jr., had his blue and white number 26 finding the quick line around the track and holding off the traveling Chad Wheeler of Muskokee, Oklahoma, to win the first 2,000-dollars-to-win Mighty Modified Special of the year at CMS.

With 44 modified cars signed in on the night, it took six heat races and two B-main events to sort out the 24-car starting field for the main event. The 10-lap heat races got under way with Concordia’s “Movin” Dave Meyer taking the win over Chad Lyle and “Fast” Richard Layne. Heat 2 saw Dean Wille, in the Farm & Home of Warrensburg machine take the win over Chad Wheeler and Terry “The Terminator” Schultz of Sedalia. Blackburn, Jr. took heat 3 with Bob Test and Denny Albertson second and third. Heat 4 saw Chillicothe’s Lee Hibner return to the track from an earlier rollover, from which he walked away and come back and win over Bobby Layne and Webb City native Jeremy Chambers. The fifth heat was won by long-distance traveler David Trauerhicht of Beatrice, Nebraska, over a hard-charging Scott Miller of Marshall and “Doctor” Don Cable. The final heat was won by Boonville’s Steve Potter over Brian McGowen from Wichita, KS, and Harrisonville’s Charles Laizure. The first 12-lap b-main event got under way with lightning flashing all over to the south of the track but no rain in sight. Jim Wooten of Belton brought Alan Deatherage and Dennis Elliott to the checkers to transfer to the main event. In the second b-main Chanute, Kansas, native John Allen took the win over Jim Moody and James McMillin of Warrensburg to complete the final three transfer spots.

When the 40-lap main event got under way it was Dave Meyer and Dean Wille on pole position as flagman Herschel Thompson unleashed the green flag. It didn’t take long for the heated action to get under way as Dean Wille and David Trauerhicht got crossed up going down the back stretch on lap one. Both were able to continue, albeit with some major damage to the Trauerhicht machine. Jess Wheeler’s night came to an early end on lap two when he exited with mechanical woes. Alan Deatherage and Don Cable got together on lap eight with Deatherage slamming into the backstretch light pole and surrounding tires. Deatherage was okay but he and Cable were done for the night. After a quick spin and yellow flag thrown for Charles Laizure, the field once again took the green with Blackburn leading over Meyer, Chad Wheeler, Wille, Schultz, Lyle and Lee Hibner. The next caution was thrown for a spinning Jim Wooton of Belton while at the same time Trauerhicht went over the hill in turns three and four but was able to return to the race. On lap 16 another caution was flown for debris on the track as Blackburn still led over Meyer and Chad Wheeler. After Dean Wille had fallen back earlier and then battled his way back, mechanical woes took him off the track and led to an 18th place finish on the night. John Allen was next to experience trouble as a flat tire forced him from the track by lap 23. On lap 24 Dave Meyer suddenly went high on the speedway and it didn’t take long for him to rapidly drop back through the field before finally being forced out by some sort of mechanical failure in the rear of the car. As Meyer was fading, Scott Miller looped his machine bringing out the final caution with 5 laps remaining. On the restart Blackburn was now feeling heavy pressure from Chad Wheeler with Schultz, McMillin and Steve Potter close behind. Wheeler was able to get by Blackburn for two of the closing laps as those two battled side-by-side. On the white-flag lap it was Wheeler and Blackburn coming to the dead even. As they headed down the backstretch on the final lap, Blackburn was able to work down low and get under Wheeler as the two made contact in turns three and four bringing the fans to their feet for one of the most exciting features in recent CMS history. In the end, Blackburn was able to edge out Wheeler at the line and take home the 2,000-dollar grand prize. Schultz, McMillin, Potter and Bobby Layne rounded out the top six.

In the 305 Sprint class, heat race action saw Austin Alumbush fly the checkers over Will Pierce and Michael White. Heat two was won by Gabe Maycock over Grain Valley’s Terry Moore and Independence native Chad Tye. With Gabe Maycock looking to increase his point lead and remain 100 percent victorious in main events, the feature got under way with Maycock and Alumbush taking the green. Unfortunately the slick, smooth condition wasn’t to Alumbush’s liking as he looped the care in turns one and two on lap nine. At the restart, which 9 laps to go it was Maycock leading Terry Moore, Will Pierce, Michael White and Randy Roberts your top five. Late in the race Alumbush had major mechanical woes down the backstretch and lost quite a bit of fluid while at the same time Will Pierce’s excellent run came to an end as his machine began to overheat. Once the track was free of the leaking fluid it was once again Maycock charging way out in the lead as he never looked back and remained undefeated in main events this year. Moore came home second, Roberts third, White fourth with Josh Fisher fifth and Jeff Hockett of Oak Grove in sixth.

In the Limited Late Model division David Gemes of Warsaw found himself in a familiar position as he was victorious in heat race number one over the fast-moving Allen Perryman of Belton and Steve Elwell. Heat two was won by Sedalia’s Carl Lewis over Brett Rollert of Smithville and Mike McCoy of Hamilton. When the limited’s main event got under way it was Gemes and Rollert bringing the field to the green. The number 3 machine of Lance Elwell experienced troubles right from the get go as he could not get his machine to maneuver in turns one and two as the field had to be bunched up for a complete restart. With Elwell on the wrecker the field once again took the green and stayed that way with a great battle between Gemes and Perryman. Perryman eventually found the quicker line around the smooth track and held off point leader Gemes at the line to take the win. Rollert came home third with McCoy fourth, Steve Elwell fifth and Walt Imhoff sixth.

With 21 street stocks on hand they began their evening with three heat races to determine the starting field for the main event. It didn’t take Warrensburg’s Wayne Harper long to find his way back to victory lane after winning the main event last week. Harper took heat one over a determined Tammy Korff and John Ebert of Bates City. Heat two was won by Chad Eickleberry over a returning Marc “The Dweeb” Carter and Cole Wimmer of Oak Grove. Jay Lyle of Warrensburg made his first appearance of the year a memorable one by taking the third heat win ahead of Troy Turley and Sedalia’s Bernie Kleoppel in his Dale Earnhardt, Wrangler paint scheme look-alike number three machine. The 15-lap main event got under way with Harper and Eickleberry leading the field to the green. Nathan Himes, the street stock point leader going into the night, had a rough go as he clipped the turns one and two safety tires early on in the race but the green flag stayed out as racing action continued. The 07d of Ron Dillon received a mechanical black flag for excessive smoke trailing from the car and his night ended early while Himes once again had troubles, this time with the turn four safety tires, which led to a yellow flag. With seven laps down it was Eickleberry leading Carter, Harper, Korff, Turley and Lyle. By lap nine Carter found himself in familiar territory as he wrestled the lead away from Eickleberry while at the same time Carl Phillips’ night came to an end with mechanical woes. Once the field went back to green for another caution it was Carter still leading the event over Eickleberry. Wayne Stevens looped his car in turns three and four and John Ebert, with nowhere to go, received heavy damage and was out for the night. On the lap 12 restart, Carter held the lead as Eickleberry’s night came to an end as he fell back in the field allowing Harper and Korff to move into second and third. At the finish line it was Carter, Harper, Korff, Turley, Wimmer and Kleoppel rounding out the top six.
