i remember that car. dad drove it a few times. said it was "evil". bob nagel owned it, and the car was housed in belleville in a warehouse on so. 3rd street. bob owned other sprint cars until about 1980 or so, until his son bobby was fatally injured in a WOO race in sedalia, mo....chuck had a speed/automotive shop in bethalto area until mid 70's. dunno what happened to him after that. he drove a midget until about that time. was a good driver. good photos. scary crash.art.

The car Bob Nagel had was the 34 car it was the first car that Chuck built on his own frame jig.The 35 car in the pic was a CAE copy they built with out a jig. Chuck is now living in florida with current wife and kids. Chuck is my father. When Nagel & Taylor split Bob took the race car and Chuck took the speed shop in Meadowbrook.Illinois which is now The Part Stop.

Does anyone remember?

Does anyone remember sometime in the early to mid 70's, a midget driver who was killed while running the USAC twin 50's at Sedallia, Duquoin, or Springfield? Not sure which track it was at. I have never been able to forget the horrible flip coming out of turn 2. Unfortunately I was watching thru the binoculars when it started and saw the whole incident. The drivers harness broke, he was ejected and sent cartwheeling high in the air. The remainder of the races were cancelled. We later heard that the drivers brother, upon arriving at the scene, had a heart attack and passed away too.

Just curious if anyone remember who the driver was, and if it was true regarding his brother. Everytime I see a sprinter or midget flip I am reminded of that terrible day.

I'm pretty sure it was at Springfield. Wasnt there but I remember my dad telling me about it. I was there when they first ran the sprinters on the mile. They raced at Shaheens on Saturday night and then ran the mile on sunday. I dont remember who he was but there was a driver killed when he went into turn one without enough air in his right rear and it came off the wheel. He flipped several times and landed on top of the wall upside down and his cage was gone except for a few bars. That image wont ever go away.

The driver that was killed in turn one at Springfield during Shaheen's Super Weekend was Doc Dawson from Ohio. The year before Cliff Johns from Indiana was killed in a crash on the front stretch right in front of the grandstand. I believe the years were 1973 and 1974. After Dawson's crash they only raced on the mile one more year after that 1975 and then they only ran Lil Springfield on that weekend.

finner 18 - I have a photo of driver "Doc Dawson," from Waynesfield, Ohio. The photo I have is of him in a supermodified back in the 60's. He raced at Eldora, New Bremen, and Millstream Speedway's in Ohio during the 60's. The photo I have is from Who's Who In Racing which I bought at Oswego Speedway, New York (date had to be about 1964).
