The 2003 Dirt track season championships were held Sat Night at the Ozarks Fasttrack with over 100 checked into the pits at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway with familiar names gracing the Winner's Circle.
In the LateModel Division,Lebanon's Jared Harris set the fast pace by gathering the top spot on lap 2 from pole setter Randy Morgan and was starting to check out in his Dodge.Newly crowned point Champion Brad Looney began his charge to the front and had moved into the runner-up spot on lap 3 with 5 time track champion Ken Essary glued right behind him.On lap 5,Looney used a low side pass coming into turn 4 to take the lead and began to pull away. The real action behind Looney was for second as the battle of Ken Essary and Dave Ware put the crowd on there feet.1 time feature winner Dustin Mooneyham had started his charge from deep in the field and was challanging up to the fourth position. With Looney pulling away,Essary and Ware really stagged a battle back and forth for the runner-up spots.Mooneyham's charge would end with a flat tire sidelining him.On lap 24,bob Ware's car came to a halt on the frontstretch bringing out the only caution just as Ware took the second spot from Essary. As the Green and white waved together,Looney stuck to the low side to claim thr top spot as Essary found a high-side pass on turn 4 to capture the runner-up spot followed by Ware, early leader Harris,Will Vaught and a hard charge from Jason Snodgrass who had charged from 14th to round out the top 6.
The Mighty Modifieds saw Eric Hudson take the opening lap lead with point champion Erik Maggard glued to his back bumper and veeteran Bill Gilliam coming hard into the picture. As Hudson and Maggard exchanged several slide jobs,Hudson would continue to hold on to the top spot as the yellow waved on lap 7 as Bill Gilliam's right rear wheel flew off and over the catch fence in turn 4.Gilliam would repair the car under caution and returned to action. On the restart,Hudson and Maggard swapped the top spot several times until the caution waved on lap 9 for Brian Schutt's stalled car.Schutt pitted and returned to the field at the rear.On the restart,Maggard took the lead in turn 1 only to have Hudson get it back in turn 2.As the duo raced down the backstretch,Maggard pulled down low into 3,with Hudson jumping the cushion in 4.From there Maggard held on to the feature win followed closely by Hudson,Shawn Walsh,Schutt, and former champion Jim Hayes in the top 5.
The SuperStock thrilled all as point champion Mike Joplin took the early lead from his from row starting with Rick brown and Reggie Jackson battling for second place. The yellow waved quickly on lap 3 as Aaron Cornell's car erupted in a blaze of flames as the motor let go_On the restart, joplin still setting a fast pace, veteran Modified driver Scotty Allen was debuting his new SuperStock and had started 13th had climbed all the way into 5 by now with a fast moving pack of Larry Prewitt,J.C.Newell,Jackson,Brown,and Roscoe Harris all battling for position. It was on lap 10 that Allen had charged into contention and took the lead over from Joplin. One lap later Joplin slowed down in turn 3 and Jackson got into his back bumper causing extensive damage. On the final restart on lap 13,Allen was pulling away and left the battle for second between Brown,Newell, and Prewitt as those three drivers exchanged spots. As the checkered waved it was Allen in the winners circle followed by Brown,Prewett,Newell, and Harris. After race inspections found Allen's car to be light at the scales giving Brown the win.
The FactoryStock feature had Burl Woods jump from his front row spot and hold on to lead all 15 laps as Sonny Nicewanner and Steve Melton battled the entire distance for second place honors before crossing the line in that order followed by point champion Quintin Day and a hard charge from Cliff Champney who started 13th on the grid.
The Bomber feature saw 20 strong take the green as point leader Gary Klossner took the opening lead with Craig Lonning in second and Micheal Maggard charging hard into third. On lap 5,Maggard used a low move pass going into turn 3 to take control and hold off several late charges from Klossner in gathering the win.Following the 13 year old to the line were Point champion Klossner,Lonning,Jason Huey, and Brandon Knutdson as only one caution flew for this feature and 17 cars finished on the lead lap.
Lonnie Muhlbauer took the lead on the opening lap and never looked back in gathering the Pro-4 Win followed by Don Johnson,Rick Metcalf,John Ryan, and Jeff White.
