Current Late Model Point leader Brad Looney had to earn the $1000 top prize
Sat night at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway as he fought problems all night long
and a hard fought battle with Scott Drake as he passed Drake on lap 23 of
the 25 lap Late Model feature on the high-banks of the Lebanon I-44 Speedway
Sat. Night.
As the field took the green,Lebanon's Brandon McCormick jumped from his
front row pole spot and shot away from the field as Tim Brown,Drake, and
Darrell Mooneyham were battling for the runner-up spots. With McCormick
checking out,Drake finally got around both Brown and Mooneyham with a top
side move on lap3.The yellow would wave for a single car spin on lap 4
bunching the field up.On the restart,McCormick found the Modified standout
Drake right on his bumper as Looney had now moved up from his 9th starting
spot up to the top 5,but all eyes were on Dave Ware as he was putting on a
charge to the front and challanging for position. On lap 6,Drake made the
move to the highside to overtake McCormick to take control as Looney was
challanging Ware for position.Another hard charge from deep in the pack was
being put on by Tony Jackson Jr after starting 10th on the grid. With Drake
setting a blistering pace,Ware,McCormick and Looney put on some great
battles for the runner-up spot as Looney finally made the move on lap 15,as
Ware and McCormick continued the battle for third.Looney then started to
reel drake in and on lap 20 the battle began as Looney looked to the inside
and Drake shut the door.Looney went upstairs as Drake had moved his line to
the inside. As the duo ran the next 3 laps side by side,Looney finally made
the winning pass on lap 23 while heading down the backstretch. As the white
was displayed,Drake looked to the inside one final time, but Looney held off
the final surge to capture the Late Model feature with Drake right on his
bumper.Following the lead duo t othe line were an early fast moving Dave
Ware, early leader McCormick, and a fast coming Tony Jackson Jr."The car
wasn't good at all in the qualifying race and we drew a tough heat,"quoted
Looney"We went to work after that and just hit the right set-up tonight. The
longer the race went green the faster this #14 went.Scotty ran a great race
and that was a hard earned victory. The crew deserved this win as they worked
there tails off to get everything right all night long."
The Modified feature would see the 20 lap feature go green, white, checkered
as Brian Schutt and Jamie Ragland brought the field down for the start with
1985 Mod champion Jim Hayes putting the nose of his car right along with the
leaders. With some great 3 wide racing early,Jeff Cutshaw shot from his 7th
starting spot to take control ealry and ran away from the field. With Cutshaw
driving away,a hard fought battle involving Schutt, point leader Erik
Maggard, former Mod Champ Rex Merritt, and veteran Scotty Allen were going at
it for the runner-up spot.On lap 15,Merritt finally made the move around
Schutt to take the runner-up spot and set his sights on leader Cutshaw and
began reeling him in.As the white displayed,Merritt closed in but not enough
time to run down Cutshaw as Cutshaw captured his 1st ever I-44 Feature
win.Following the winner was Merritt,Schutt,Erik Maggard, and Allen rounding
out the top 5.
The SuperStock feature saw Shawn Danuser jump to the early lead from his
front row starting spot, with Reggie Jackson in heavy tow.Danuser was setting
a fast pace early as the yellow would wave on lap 4 for a Doug Rich Spin.On
the restart,Reggie Jackson started working the top groove while leader
Danuser was working the middle line.On lap 7,Jackson took the lead from
Danuser after a red flag was displayed for Paul Moore as his throttle stuck
wide open going into turn 3 and hitting the wall.Larry Prewitt was starting
his charge to the front after starting the feature in 10th starting
spot. With Jackson in the lead,Prewitt was working the low side with Jackson
staying upstairs as Rick Brown was making his way to the front pack chase
and was into third. On lap 12,Prewitt made the winning pass downstairs and
held off repeated challanges from Jackson in returning to the winners
circle.Following the top duo to the line was Brown,Mike Steiro and point
leader Mike Joplin.
The FactoryStocks would see point leader Quintin Day jump to the early lead
with Jordan Holloway in heavy tow followed by Darrin Crisler.Last weeks
runner-up Chuck Pederson began his front running move on lap 4 and was
quickly contending for the lead. After gaining ground on the top
side,Pederson began his move around Day on the bottom with Crisler and
Holloway battling for third. On lap 12,the red flag would wave for Randall
Sacket's rollover. On the restart,Pederson made the move to the lead to only
loose it back in turn 2 after jumping the cushion allowing Day to capture
the victory.Following Day to the line was Pederson who came from 5th to
second in the last 2 laps,Crisler,Holloway, and a hard charging Andrew Stake. The Bombers had the starting grid of 23 take the green with 3 wide racing
only to have a wreck collecting Leader John McGinnis,Casey Mooneyham,Brandon
Knutdson,Jason Conner, and John Roberts bringing out the original restart. On
the start,Robert White jumped out to the lead with Gary Klossner following
behind. With some great action going on behind the leaders,Craig Lonning and
Roger Flood battling for position behind Klossner.A couple of single car
spins bringing out the yellows would find White still in control. On lap
11.Klossner would pull in to the pits with problems putting Lonning into
second and Flood who had charged into third.Lap 12 found Lonning and Flood
getting together bringing out another yellow and both front runners going to
the rear.On the restart,White was puuling away looking for his first I-44
win,and KC Prettyman running a strong second.Rodney Jones who had to restart
earlier in the feature back in 16th was the man on the move as he overtook
Jason Huey for third and was closing on Prettyman. As the checkered
waved,White gathered the win followed by a hard charging
Jones,Prettyman,Huey,and Lonning.
The Midwest Limited Sprints made a return visit to the Speedway with
defending Champion Joe Todd jumping from his front row starting spot after
battling early with Eric Todd to gather the top spot over the 16 car field
and rolled away capturing the Winged Sprint Car Feature.Following Todd to
the stripe was his son Eric,JP Compton,Chuck Fortune, and Clint Todd as the
15 lap affair went green, white, checkered.Over 105 cars checked into the pits
for the racing action.Regular points battle continues next week with racing
at 7:30 sharp.
