This week was practically a carbon copy of last week with rain throughout the week and sunshine on Saturday. That allowed the racecars to come to the track and show off for their moms during the Mother Dear program at Macon Speedway. In addition to all the Mother’s Day festivities with carnations and giveaways from Wall Street Embroidery and Silk Screen in Macon and Zips Flowers by the Gates in Decatur, the fans were treated to an evening full of fast racing and big money features.

The first feature of the night would be the Modified make-up feature of April 18. Three of the first four features in 2009 were won by the front row. Last week’s feature winner Steve Ewing joined two-time winner Dave Crawley, Jr. for a battle of 20 laps. Running the bottom, Ewing passed Crawley on lap 13 only to see Crawley make the same move to retake the lead on lap 15. Lap 15 also provided a yellow flag to allow all the cars to bunch together.

On the restart, another yellow flag came out which caused Ewing and Jim Leka to need infield attention. Leka would have a flat right front tire. Because of the tire change, Leka would be forced to the back of the field. Ewing would also be forced to the back of the field. He would leave the race on lap 17. Coming back to the green flag, Crawley would pull away from Aaron Burcham for the win. Jeremy Nichols started seventh row inside and made the passes from fourth to second in the race’s final lap.

The regularly scheduled feature events were just as crazy as the Modified make-up. In the Touchtone Energy Sportsman feature, the event got started with a fire under the hood of Mark Reed. Once the fire was put out, the green flag waved and Norm Wood of Sullivan took off and would not be challenged. Rick Roedel tried to catch him but was unsuccessful. The feature for Wood would be his first of the season.

The Late Models feature was the second race in the ten of the Midwest Big Ten Series. The first race started in Jacksonville Friday night and Steve Sheppard, Jr. won. The second race occurred the following night at Macon, and the headline stayed the same. Steve Sheppard, Jr. led all 25 laps and won his second Macon Speedway feature.. Though caution laps allowed second-place finisher Dick Taylor to stay close, it was obvious that “Speedy Stevie” had the fastest car on the track. Brandon Sheppard (son of Steve Sheppard, Jr. ) finished third with Kyle Logue in fourth.

The second Modified feature was filled with plenty of exciting racing, much like the first earlier in the program. Jeremy Nichols, who finished second in the first feature, would not make it past lap two as the car blew smoke on the front stretch and then stopped in turn two. He would be out of the race with a broken transmission.

The front row consisted of Curt Rhodes and Steve Ewing. Davey Crawley, Jr. (winner of the first Modified feature) started fourth row inside and would be a factor in the race’s final laps. But the beginning of the race would belong to Rhodes. Until lap 13, Rhodes had the car to beat but then lapped traffic started to catch up to him and that allowed Steve Ewing a chance to contest for the lead and on that 13th lap, Ewing would take control of the race. By lap 18, Crawley was making moves up to the front and still trailing Ewing and Rhodes, the lapped traffic again caught up to the leader. Crawley made the move on the inside of the fourth turn to capture second into the final lap of the race and again in the final turn, Crawley ousted Ewing for the win. The feature, Crawley’s fourth of the year, gave him a feature sweep for the night and $600 during the Spring Series event. The finale of the series will take place at Shepp’s Speedway in Alexander, IL, Sunday evening.
Ewing would be frustrated only for so long as he hopped into his Street Stock and started that feature on the front row outside, opposite to Jeff Reed, Sr. Ewing led all 12 laps on route to his third feature win of 2009. Blake Shelley finished in second with Mike Pickering holding off Larry Russell, Jr. for the third spot.

Joe Reed once again claimed the checkered flag in the Pro Hornets class with his third feature win. He battled Jeff Dodd once again and Reed emerged with the win as lapped traffic kept Dodd back far enough to avoid a close finish.

Bruce Dulgar was victorious in the Amateur Hornet feature. The son of the two-time Pro Hornet champion showed the same moves as his dad to keep away all comers as he picked up his first win of the year. Josh Hartman crept slowly to the finish line and was rear-ended by Leon Kallenbach and Brett Embry as they crossed the finish line. All drivers would be able to walk away but their cars would not.

The Crazy Chicks N Cars ladies race lived up to its billing as ten women jumped behind the wheel of the Hornets for six laps. Megan Thompson would leave with the win as she passed and held off Mindy Fowler.

Macon Speedway wishes all mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day. Next Saturday night will provide more on the edge of your seat racing as we will have another full show along with double features for the Touchtone Energy Sportsman. The make-up event from April 18th as well as their regularly scheduled feature will be run.
