Malden Speedway Results
May 19, 2006 (Includes 4-28-06 Make Up Races)

With the rain playing havoc on the 2006 racing season, the Malden Speedway was able to get it’s third week of racing in Friday Night. It was an exciting night of racing that included 10 feature races as the rained out races from April 28 were also run.

The big winner of the night was Arlington, TN’s Shane Stephens as he picked up both two feature wins in the Modified division. In the make up race, Shane made it look easy as he won an early battle with Greg King and Joe Giesler. Once he cleared those two, the race was pretty much over. Stephens pulled away to a full straight lead over second place King by the end of the race. Larry Hull, Tim Webb, and Todd Clifford rounded out the top five. Giesler and King won the heat races.

The nightcap race of the program was the 25-lap, $1,000 to win Modified feature, sponsored by Burge Irrigation. A post race tech failure disqualified apparent winner Bart Richardson following a whale of a race giving Stephens his second win on the night and third in a row at the track. There race’s lone caution came at the end of the second lap, leaving 24 full laps of racing to decide the outcome. Richardson took the lead on lap three and pulled away from the field, but could not shake Stephens. From lap 12 on the leaders were in lapped traffic and they never slowed down. After working his way through some stiff competition, Troy Fowler closed to the rear bumper of Stephens on lap 18. That would be as close as he would get though as the race finished in heavy traffic. Todd Clifford, Jared Wagster, and defending track champion Mike Francis filled out the top five. Heat winners were Stephens, Hunter Rasdon, and Fowler.

Jeff Moss and Scott Gibbs split the night’s races between them. Moss won the make up race, with Gibbs taking the regularly scheduled race. In the first race, Moss looked like he had the field covered until the final lap, when he got wedged in lapped traffic and Steve Karnes closed to his rear bumper and made it a drag race out of turn four to the checkered flag. Scott Gibbs led the second race from start to finish, although he never pulled away from Moss. Gibbs took the checkered flag with a one-car length lead for the win.

In the Street Stock division, Kyle Berry led from start to finish in the make up race to pick up his first win of the year. The final half of the race was run caution free and Berry pulled to a four second win over second place Steve Forsythe. Chris Kelley, Ronnie Tilley, and Barry Daniels made up the rest of the top five. Berry, Forsythe, and Doug Moore won the heat races.

In the regularly scheduled race Doug Moore piloted the #3 car to victory lane in a hard fought battle. The fans and Kevin Holman got a scare on lap five as his car went up in a flash fire coming out of turn two. Holman escaped the car unhurt and the flames were extinguished quickly. I would like to thank the track personnel and the Malden Fire Department’s rescue team for their quick response in helping avert disaster. Once the race restarted Moore had his hands full. He gave up the lead to Chris Kelly on lap nine as the pair swapped position twice in one lap. Kelley held on for second, Coot Wilson took third making it a clean sweep for Portageville. Steve Forsythe and Kyle Berry made late charges to reach the top five. Forsythe was set back by a mid race caution and Berry had mechanical problems in his heat race and started at the rear of the field. Scott Wicker won the B-Main. Doug Moore, Dale Moore, Forsythe, and Wilson won the heat races.
