Saturday night at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) was full of great racing action, mixed emotions, and several happy young race fans for KDKD Radio and PAR Electric Kids’ Night at the speedway. Prior to the start of the evening’s competition, promoter Earl Walls made the surprising announcement that he and wife Susan have put the race track up for sale and will be retiring after the end of this year as promoters of CMS. Walls nearly single-handedly changed the face of modified racing in the region when he became the first local promoter to increase payout, ultimately bringing A-Mods to the forefront they enjoy today at several tracks. He and wife Susan promoted the track for the last 15 seasons, setting many standards of operation along the way. Presently, as of Saturday night the track is “for sale.” There are three nights left at CMS under the Walls’ direction for this season including one more $3,000-to-win ‘mighty’ modified special event on Saturday, August 30th. With 93 cars and drivers present during the night’s program it was a night to remember in many aspects on a clear and cool summer evening.

Twenty-four B-modifieds drew for starting positions at the beginning of the night and competed in three heat races, one b-main event, and a main event. In the first heat, Brad smith found his way to victory lane ahead of a hard-fought battle in second with Chad Lebsock and Bobby Raybourn close behind in second and third. In heat race two, it took several starts before Rusty Trimble sailed to his fifth heat race win of the year over Ethan Isaacs and Brian Ziegler. In the third and final heat, Scotty Martin jumped out to an early lead and was never contested as he cruised to his tenth heat race victory of the year ahead of young drivers Bryan Montgomery and Joshua Jacobs. Michael Mullins edged out Lucas Isaacs and Phil Wright during the B-mod b-main event. Brad Smith and Rusty Trimble started on the pole of the fifteen-lap main event. Lebsock had a scary moment off of corner number four when he spun while running in fourth position. Jacob Ebert and Jeremy Lile both received damage in the incident and were unable to finish the race along with Lebsock, who also pulled off the track. Once the race resumed, Martin had the better start and grabbed the lead away from Smith and led until a lap-four caution flag flew for Bob Dumit. Again the field was realigned with eleven laps remaining as the race resumed with Martin, Smith and Montgomery holding down the top-three positions. Another caution flew for the spinning car of Chris Stout just as Montgomery made a move on Smith for second. Smith got his position back on the restart as Martin continued to pace the field. As the laps wound down Martin stretched his lead and went on to win his eighth feature victory over Montgomery, Smith, Ethan Isaacs, and Trimble in the top five. Ziegler, Jacobs, Mark Evinger, Raybourn, and Chris Brockway rounded out the top ten.

Nineteen Street Stocks showed up for three heat races and a feature event. Sixth-starting John Brooks only needed one lap to grab the lead and cruise to his first heat-race win of the year in only a few appearances during the 2008 race season. Dale Atkinson and Jerry Schmidt settled for second and third at the line. Heat race number two went to Brian Johnson, his fourth of the year, ahead of visiting driver Dustin Gehlkin of Sedalia, and point’s leader Nic Bennett. The third and final Street Stock qualifying heat race saw Fulton, Missouri driver Tammy Korff pick up her second heat win of the year over John Miller and Herb Dannar. John Brooks and Brian Johnson paced the field from the front row with Tammy Korff and Dale Atkinson in hot pursuit. Johnson’s race came to an early end as heavy smoke bellowed from his machine. Brooks mistook the mechanical flag that waved for Johnson to leave the speedway, at which time a yellow flag was flown to correct the situation. Brooks paced the field with Korff and Atkinson maintaining their second and third spots. Another caution flag flew on lap six when a fan in the stands was hit with a dirt clod. The fan checked out okay and the field went back to green-flag racing. Again Brooks paced the field as the field returned to racing action. Tammy Korff was trying to pick up some points on Bennet but unfortunately spun out of corner number four to bring out a lap-ten caution flag. Brooks resumed the race lead once the field went back to green and led to the finish for his 88th career win over a strong-running Dale Atkinson. Chad Eickleberry advanced to third from his twelfth starting spot. Herb Dannar, back from hurricane relief efforts in southern Texas, finished fourth one spot ahead of Jerry Schmidt. Dustin Gehlkin raced his way to a sixth-place run ahead of Anthony Ward, Scott Krause, Michael Mullins and Nic Bennett rounding out the rest of the top ten.

A solid field of eighteen ULMA late models contested three heat races with Bob King from Independence grabbing the first heat ahead of Gary Billings, Jr., of Prairie Village, Kansas, and Larry Clawson, Jr., of Pleasant Valley, Missouri. Steven Clancy held off a strong running Jason Bodenhamer in the second heat to take his third victory of the year with Brett Wood from Warrensburg in third. The third and final heat race went to Belton driver Allen Perryman for his first win of the year over Mike Ryun and Randy Ainsworth of Excelsior Springs. Bob King and Steven Clancy started on the pole positions for the 15-lap feature. King jumped out to an early lead with Clancy trying to hold back Ryun in third. Ten fast-paced laps were clicked off with Clancy reeling in King by lap ten. Billings and Perryman had their own battle going for fourth with Billings holding on to third. Coming down the front stretch for lap ten, Brett Wood spun off of turn four with Ainsworth involved in the caution flag as well. Unfortunately Ainsworth was unable to continue and took a hit in the track points; he entered the night tied for second in CMS track points standings. King held the lead with Clancy and Ryun nose-to-tail for the point until Ryun went up and over the turn one embankment, leading to another caution period. With Ryun now tailback on the restart, Clancy moved to the front by lap thirteen and held off the charge of King in second. It was Clancy’s second victory this year at the track. Billings ran solidly to third just ahead of Allen Perryman in fourth with Jeremy Watts fifth. Ryun recovered from his off-track excursion to finish sixth ahead of David Angell, Jon Binning, Larry Clawson, and Brett Wood rounding out the top ten.

Thirty-two ‘Mighty’ Modifieds competed in four fast and furious heat races with ‘Chargin’ Charlie Ebert returning to victory lane in fine fashion over Terry Schnakenburg of Concordia and ‘Fast’ Richard Layne of Kansas City in heat one. A stacked field raced to victory lane in heat two with Parkville, Missouri driver Kerry Davis taking the win over Chillicothe driver Lee Hibner and veteran modified hot-shoe Tom ‘the Rooster’ Charles in third. Qualifying heat race number three went to a fast-running Dean Wille of Warrensburg, over ‘Smokin’ Joe Walker and Jake Richards. Matt Johnson ran strong for his first heat race win of the year over Dustin Boney and Terry Schultz in the fourth and final heat race. The final starting positions were sorted out in a ten-lap b-main event just after the intermission-time break and foot races for the kids. Jason Bodenhamer of Centerview came away with the win ahead of Joshua Stephens of Buckner, Dave Meyer of Concordia, and Cody Owens from Parkville, Missouri. Ebert and Davis set sail for twenty laps in the main event as Davis paced the field early with Matt Johnson close behind in second. Walker and Wille had a great battle going for third and fourth with Lee Hibner and Dustin Boney within striking distance of the lead. Another scary incident with a fan in the stands brought out a yellow flag, the fan was checked out by the track emergency services and the race was soon able to restart. Johnson grabbed the lead by lap nine with Davis back to second. Dustin Boney charged his way to third midway through the race by utilizing the high side with Davis still holding down second. Boney moved into second by lap fifteen as Johnson tried to pull away in the lead. The two swapped the lead several times in the closing stages of the main event with Johnson eventually edging out Boney for his first feature win at CMS of the year. Boney finished second ahead of David in third. Jake Richards ran strong to fourth over Wille and Schultz in fifth and sixth. Completing the rest of the top ten were Joe Walker, Tom Charles, Tim Karrick and Lee Hibner.

Kid’s night foot-race winners were Claire Wille of Warrensburg in girls 3-4, Conner Hartwig of Oak Grove in boys 3-4, Breeana Clayton Warrensburg in girls 5-6, Dillon Guinn of Warrensburg in boys 5-6, Abra Raybourn of Odessa in girls 7-8, Jarred Kreisel of Warrensburg in boys 7-8, Elizabeth Nimmer of Warrensburg in girls 9-10, Dalton Trimble of Eudora, Kansas in boys 9-10, Mackenzie Walls of Blue Springs in girls 11-12, and Corey Oliver of Grain Valley in boys 11-12. CMS thanks Donnie Dannar, Dave and Judy Meyer, Brett Wood, James Rutledge, David Angell, Herb Dannar, Tammy Korff, Bobby Raybourn, Brian Ziegler, Bryan Montgomery, Robert Harrell, Alan and Lorraine Miller, the Rib Crib, Wal-mart, and the Warrensburg DQ Grill & Chill for their contributions to another successful and memorable kid’s night. We could have not done it without all of your great contributions!

CMS will return to action for another great Saturday night of racing next weekend, August 23rd. Pit gates open at 4:30, grandstand-seating opens at 5; hot laps roll out at 7 with racing close behind at 7:30. There is still one more week for modified drivers to get a second weekly race start prior to the final big-money race on August 30th. By racing twice during a weekly event throughout the year at CMS, modified drivers do not have to pay the $100 entry fee for the special event. The registration fee has also been waved for the August 30th event. For complete admission information, race results, and general track information log onto www.centralmissourispeedway.net or call the Track Report line at (660) 747-2166. See you next week for Kid’s Night!
