Jason Meyers put on one of the most impressive displays of horsepower
Wednesday night that the World of Outlaws Sprint Series has seen all
year.

After chasing down pole-sitter Sammy Swindell Wednesday night in the
Arctic Cat Summer Nationals at Missouri State Fair Speedway, Meyers was
able to drive his car under Swindell’s machine on Lap 11 in Turn 1,
find a little grip in Turn 2, and surge to the lead down the
backstretch, making it stick through Turns 3 and 4.

After that, Meyers was gone with no more cautions to slow him down. By
the time the checkered flag waved on the 25-lap feature he had built
more than a 7-second advantage on the half-mile oval, racing to nearly
half-a-track lead.

Paul McMahan held on for second ahead of Brian Paulus, Swindell, Shane
Stewart and Danny Lasoski, who was co-promoting the event that donated
all of its proceeds to the Michael Ross Memorial Foundation.

Virtually unchallenged down the stretch, Meyers also benefited from the
only caution of the race. Craig Dollansky, who was second in points
coming into the night, earned the outside pole by winning the second
Dash, but as he and Swindell came to the green flag, the two got
together under the flagstand. While Swindell was able to maintain his
momentum into Turn 1, it was clear something had happened to
Dollansky’s machine. As he raced down the back and into Turns 3 and 4,
the car finally let go and flipped, knocking him out of the race.
Dollansky was able to walk back to the pits, but his misfortune
combined with Meyers’ victory in which he led the most laps — worth
four bonus points — moves Meyers into second in the standings. Meyers
is now 294 points behind Steve Kinser, who finished ninth, as the
series prepares to race this weekend at Knoxville Raceway.

“I had a good car all night long,” said Meyers, a Mean 15 racer from
Clovis, Calif., who posted the fastest lap in time trials and picked up
his third feature victory of the season. “I hot lapped good, qualified
good, everything just went real well. These guys have been doing a
great job. We’ve been running real good lately and that does a lot for
everybody’s confidence. You roll in here tonight knowing that you can
win the race. That’s half the battle right there. On top of that, every
motor we’ve got is running great, Don Ott and Charlie Garrett have done
a great job. It’s a team effort. It’s not me out there winning those
races, it’s all of us. It’s all our sponsors and everybody that makes
it happen. We’ve got things working right now. I just hope we hurry up
and get to those races that pay more than $10,000 to win.”

When Swindell captured the Stacker 2® Dash to land on the pole, it
appeared his car might be uncatchable. But Meyers whittled away at the
lead in the first 10 laps of the feature before making his move.

“We went into lapped traffic and I got underneath him going into Turn
1,” Meyers said. “I poked my nose underneath him in Turns 1 and 2 and
he slid up a little bit. There was a little patch of moisture down
there and I was able to catch it and get a run on him down the
backstretch.”

With Meyers out front, eyes turned to the race for second, with McMahan
trying to fend off Paulus, who was in search of his third consecutive
top-five finish. As rubber began to take hold on the track, McMahan was
able to navigate traffic and keep Paulus behind him.

“This place is pretty nice,” said McMahan, a Mean 15 racer from
Nashville who was running in the top five last week at Eagle Raceway
when his right rear tire blew late in the race. “It’s a great deal we
have here with the Michael Ross Memorial Foundation that all the
proceeds go to it. It’s a great event for everybody.

“We were very good at the beginning. We got rolling there and found the
rubber. I think I found it before anybody else, but those guys were
racing through lapped traffic and they slid up and found it. Once Jason
got out front, there was no catching him. We were back there racing for
second so I was making sure I got through the night without blowing a
tire. I wasn’t going to catch him so I just tried to stay there and run
second.”

Paulus now has three top-five runs in A-features, including a victory
earlier this month at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in New York

“You knew the rubber was going to come in, you could see it in the
Dashes and the B-main,” said Paulus, a Mean 15 racer and native of
Mechanicsburg, Pa. “We went out with the perfect tire. I think Meyers
did, McMahan did, too, and a couple of guys that ran right with us.
There were a couple of laps when you got into a group of cars, lapped
traffic early in the race, where you could actually stick the car real
low on the bottom and drive it off and get a position. That’s what we
were able to do early in the race.”

His fifth-place finish is Stewart’s second top-five A-feature finish
this season and his 14th top-10 run. An experienced racer, Stewart now
jumps back into the lead for the World of Outlaws’ top rookie honors by
two points over Tim Kaeding.

“We had a great car,” said Stewart, of Bixby, Okla. “A top-five is good
for us. This team really needed it, and I needed it. I’ve had some
really good runs here and one of these days we’re going get a win here.
All in all it was a great night for the Rudeen No. 26 and hopefully
Knoxville is just as good.”

Lasoski was pushing hard for a victory in front of a huge hometown
crowd. Despite being one of the organizers of the event and racing in a
celebrity modified event, Lasoski was able to keep his focus on the
feature.

“I feel like a proud father,” said Lasoski, a Mean 15 racer and former
series champion from Dover, Mo. “This is overwhelming for me. To have
all my friends come here and do this. The support of all the Missouri
fans who have come out for a great cause. As long as they continue to
support this deal, I’ll put this deal on. It’s all about the fans.”

But in the end it was Meyers who came out on top. And it’s clear he has
his sights set on the big prize at the end of the season.

“We’ve been going for that for a while,” Meyers said. “You’ve got to be
second before you can try to be first. Now we can try to chase down
that green [Kinser’s] car. It will be real tough, but who knows. It
would be a great story if we can make it happen.”

SEDALIA NOTEBOOK
• The night benefiting the Michael Ross Memorial Foundation featured
NASCAR star Tony Stewart winning a 360 sprint car heat race and a
celebrity modified feature won by NHRA star Ron Capps. The celebrity
field included, among others, Danny Lasoski, Stewart, NHRA stars Doug
Kalitta, Gary Scelzi and Capps, NASCAR legend Dave Marcis, Outlaws
racers Kraig Kinser and Kevin Swindell.

• Jesse Hockett captured a 360-sprint car support division feature.

• World of Outlaws Sprint Series star Joey Saldana continues to recover
from a concussion at his home in Indiana. Saldana, who is improving
each and is eager to get the No. 2 Volcano Joe’s Coffee car back on the
circuit, was injured last weekend at Eagle Raceway in a three-car crash
during a heat race.

• In the Stacker 2® Dash, Sammy Swindell got the jump going into Turn 1
and powered his way to victory and the pole by riding the cushion.
Jason Meyers kept pace to finish second as the field stretched out with
Brian Paulus, Kraig Kinser, Brian Brown and Terry McCarl rounding out
the field.

• In the second Dash, Craig Dollansky showed off his the horsepower
that earned him the second-quickest lap in time trials as he started on
the pole and led flag-to-flag to earn the outside pole. Paul McMahan
raced to finish in second, followed by Shane Stewart, Danny Lasoski,
Brooke Tatnell and Wayne Johnson.

• In the B-main, Travis Rilat charged out to the lead with Justin
Henderson in pursuit when contact at high speed in Turn 3 sent Daryn
Pittman’s machine on a scary end-over-end flip bringing out a red flag.
Pittman was able to walk away and Rilat surged back into the lead as
the field settled down — at least until the final lap. As Rilat took
the checkered flag, a scramble for the final transfer positions to the
feature forced cars three-wide off of Turn 4. Jason Sides held off
Kevin Swindell and Henderson for second. Swindell finished third,
followed by Henderson, Johnny Herrera, and Jason Solwold.

• In the first heat, Brandon Wimmer held off Brooke Tatnell on the
first lap in Turn 2 and pulled out to the victory. Wayne Johnson raced
his way into second, with Kraig Kinser, Tatnell, Brian Brown and Jason
Meyers also transferring to the feature.

• In the second heat, Tim Shaffer jumped out to a huge lead while Donny
Schatz and Kerry Madsen raced themselves into the feature after
starting outside the transfer positions. Also advancing were Craig
Dollansky, who charged from sixth to second, Terry McCarl and Shane
Stewart.

• In the third heat, Steve Kinser shot into the lead going into Turn 1
and ran away with the victory. Danny Lasoski cruised to the checkered
flag in second, with Brian Paulus, Sammy Swindell, Paul McMahan and Tim
Kaeding also transferring. Kaeding grabbed the final spot when he cut
to the inside of Jason Solwold exiting Turn 4 as they came to the white
flag.

• For the second consecutive race night, Jason Meyers paced the 29-car
field in time trials with a lap around the half-mile mile oval in
16.507 seconds at 109.045 mph. Craig Dollansky established the track
record of 15.676 seconds on March 23, 2001.

• The Outlaws return to Knoxville Raceway on Friday and Saturday for
the second time this season. The series then closes out the month on
June 28 at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D., before spending the
Independence Day Weekend racing July 1-2 in the Duel in the Dakotas at
Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D., July 4 at Cedar Lake
Speedway in Somerset, Wis., July 6 at The Raceway at Powercom Park in
Beaver Dam, Wis., and July 8 at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., where
the series will be racing in conjunction with the NASCAR event at
Chicagoland Speedway.

• The Outdoor Channel will air on June 29 the race June 9 from I-96
Speedway. All of the action from the Eagle Nationals will air at 8 p.m.
(ET) on July 6 on The Outdoor Channel.
