Lonnie Wheatley, PEORIA, Ariz. (July 8, 2014) – Canyon Speedway Park is where the action will be this Saturday night as the 1/3-mile clay oval near Phoenix hosts the Mid-Summer Classic.

IMCA Modifieds will headline Saturday’s Mid-Summer Classic with Pure Stocks, Renegades, Dwarf Cars and X Mods on the card as well. After a Wednesday night Open Practice session from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday’s Mid-Summer Classic goes green at 7:00 p.m.

Ricky Thornton, Jr., will try to continue his dominance in the Modified ranks by adding another notch to the win column. Thornton, Jr., has racked up eight feature wins in ten tries dating back to the Winter Challenge in January.

Thornton, Jr., has opened up a 22 point advantage in the track championship points race over Ryan Roath, with Cody Center just three more points back in third. Steve Stultz and George Fronsman round out the current top five in IMCA Modified points.

The points battle in the Pure Stock ranks is a tight one with only seven points separating the top four drivers. Although winless, Chris McCurdy, Jr., is atop the point charts with a 2-point advantage over April 26 winner Joe Vlasity. Matt Martinez is another point back in third with Zack Madrid seven points out of the lead in fourth.

Martinez is the only driver to post multiple Pure Stock wins in points action with triumphs on April 12 and then the most recent event June 14. Other winners include Vlasity, John Parmeley and Ty Weidner.

Tate Allen has moved atop Renegade points after his win in the most recent event on June 14. Allen has a five-point lead over Joe Peterson with April 12 winner David Harrington another point back in third.

After Tony Martin topped the initial two Dwarf Car outings of the season at CSP, Mike Strobel has reached victory lane in the most recent pair of events.

Bo Partain has claimed victory in the lone X-Mod feature of the season thus far at CSP.
