Another Saturday night of muggy weather for race fans which featured exciting dirt racing action at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) on Rib Crib Race Night. 93 drivers signed in to compete on the high-banked clay track as CMS honored local military heroes as talented drivers in four divisions raced for the elusive checkered flag. The Mighty Modifieds were also tuning up their machines for the annual Tom Wilson Memorial - BBQ Bowl Special next Saturday night with a $3,000 to win 40 lap feature event. All total there were 19 hotly contested races during the evening’s program with a new winner in the Mighty Modified division.

In what has become the standard this year at CMS fans were treated to the most talented weekly modified drivers in the Midwest and watched 40 cars competing in five heat races and two B-Mains after intermission to decide the feature event starting line-up. In the first heat Curt Potter drove hard to the checkers for his first win this year over Terry Schultz and Aaron Marrant. In heat two, Tim Karrick flew to the victory over Jim Moody and James Cameron. The heat three winner was the veteran Late Model- Modified driver Jason Bodenhamer ahead of Don Danner and James McMillin. Veteran Kansas City driver Jean Claxton wins in heat race four over Lee Hibner and Travis Johnson. Heat race five was exciting with Joe Walker winning ahead of Dustin Boney, Lucas Conley and Tom Charles passing James Reid on the last lap to make the A-Main event. Long time CMS drivers, Dennis Walrath and Dave Meyer transferred through the first B-main and young guns, Kyle Westerhold and Aaron Poe battled to transfer from the second B-main event. Making the A-Main in the Modified division at CMS is quite an accomplishment with a stellar field of drivers each week. Potter and Karrick led the field to the green flag and Karrick drove hard to lead the first lap with Potter right on his tail. Westerhold got caught up in some contact which resulted in a yellow flag on lap two and he had to leave the track. On the re-start Karrick held on to the lead with Potter, Bodenhamer, Claxton and Walker fighting for second place from behind. Karrick hung on to his lead for eighteen laps until Justin Boney found some grip on the high side and passed him leading into the final lap. Boney hung on into the finish in his Hughes Modified for the thrilling victory with the fans going crazy. Boney moved all the way up from his tenth place starting spot to edge Karrick who once again finished second. Potter had a solid run for third with Walker and Claxton completing the top five.

This week seventeen late models battled for the front row starting positions during three heats to decide the lineup for the 15-lap feature event. Kevin Coyne won in heat race number one over David Finkemeier and Fred King. In heat number two it was 2006 Track Champion, Brett Rollert, with the win ahead of Jon Binning and Steve Clancy. The third heat race winner was Wes Jenkins followed by Bob King and Jamie Wineland. With Coyne and Rollert on pole for the feature event it appeared tonight’s race would be another quick paced feature as the two led the ULMA field to the starting line. Jenkins and Finkemeier had trouble in lap two with Jenkins leaving the track over turn two during the re-start. Rollert started strong up front and found his favored line on the middle to low side of the high banked track. Rollert, picking up his third feature win this year was not seriously challenged after the first few laps of the race. Several drivers caused yellow flag re-starts which tightened up the field. Binning and Bob King had a good battle for second and third place to the finish behind Rollert, who has suddenly pushed ahead in the points chase during the past month. Fred King did a great job keeping his car under control after hitting the tire coming out of turn four for a seventh place finish. Danny Lorton was strong earlier in the race but after climbing into sixth, he had to depart the track for mechanical problems. Binning, Bob King and Clancy finished behind Rollert with Coyne slipping back to fifth to complete the top five.

Fourteen Street Stock drivers signed in to attempt to slow Brian Johnson’s dominance in this highly competitive class. Herb Danner earned the pole position for the feature by winning the first heat ahead of Brett Nail and Brian Johnson. In heat two, Chad Eickleberry won another one ahead of Jeff Lazenby and John Miller. After the heat races were completed the lineup featured Danner and Eickleberry on the front row to start the A-Main race. Danner stayed up front during the lead laps with Eickleberry, Nail and Johnson tailing just behind. Several drivers caused yellows and experienced trouble during several laps of the race. John Miller found himself re-starting the race at the tail of the field with new comer Krystal Guy and Steve Barber exiting the track with mechanical problems. For several laps Danner led the field while Johnson began working the low side of the track to position him just behind the leader. Johnson and Danner tangled after a tight turn four pass by Johnson with Danner ending up in the in-field. Finally, Brian Johnson took control and won his sixth feature of the year with Chad Eickleberry hounding him into a solid second place finish. Nathan Himes started seventh and had a nice run up through the field to finish third ahead of Nail who crossed the line in fourth and Lazenby ended up in fifth place.

Another strong field of CMS B-modified drivers raced hard for starting positions in the 15-lap A-Main event. To filter out the field three quick heat races settled the event lineup for the 22-car feature. Brian Ziegler started the night by winning the first heat ahead of Gary Lewis driving the 29L car of Chad Lebsock and Chris Brockway. Heat two was competitive with D.J. DeMotte winning ahead of newly wedded Bobby Raybourn and last week’s feature winner Scotty Martin. Young driver Ethan Issacs claimed first in the third heat ahead of Darrell Sweeden and Jeremy Lile. Former feature winner Ziegler and DeMotte led the field to the green flag but a huge pile up occurred in turn two with twelve cars spinning out, stopping or leaving the track to avoid a huge crash. Once the field was re-set and green flag came back out, it was Ziegler who led the first few laps, but on lap three his car had a mechanical failure and he had to park his car on the in-field. On lap four Ethan Issacs led the race until Martin passed him on the low side and dominated the rest of the race going away from the field for his seventh feature win this year. A great battle for second through fifth place was fun to watch as Issacs finished in second place with Gary Lewis in third and Raybourn in fourth with Tyler Lewis completing the top five.
