Saturday

Tom Meents returned to the massive Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis for the first time in three years and dominated the action, piloting Maximum Destruction to a sweep of the Monster Jam racing and freestyle competitions.

Dennis Anderson in Grave Digger edged Meents by two tenths of a second to set the fast qualifying time, but the story in time trials was newcomer Phil Foster who flipped his Hot Wheels Ford on his qualification run. With virtually the entire body ripped off the crew got Hot Wheels repaired in time for a first round racing match-up with the fast qualifier and Hot Wheels scored the upset win, eliminating Grave Digger. Hot Wheels made it all the way to the semi-finals before being eliminated by Jimmy Creten in Bounty Hunter in a race where the front right wheel ripped off of the Hot Wheels machine. Meents finished off a strong night by Bruce Haney in Bad News, Maximum Destruction beating Bad News to set up a rematch of the 2002 World Finals championship race where Meents beat Creten for the title.

Maximum Destruction edged Bounty Hunter in a great race to take the racing event win.

In freestyle the action was wild, with the tacky surface and the drivers going all out in front of the capacity crowd resulting in several flipped and damaged trucks. Dan Evans opened the competition with a strong performance in Destroyer that ended with the truck on its lid. Evans had the early lead, then his score was equaled by Dawn Creten in Scarlet Bandit. Both David Smith in King Krunch and Jason Witte in Wild Hair rolled their trucks less than half-way through their scheduled :90 performances. Hometown favorite Guy Wood in Bulldozer then grabbed the lead with a searing performance, finishing the final :30 of the run even though he had already snapped bars off the front of the truck. Bulldozer’s 26 was on top, until Meents ripped off one of his most memorable freestyles ever. Filling the minute and half with incredible air and total destruction of everything on the track, the judges scored Meents with a 27. Grave Digger then tried to take the win and had the crowd screaming, especially when Anderson pulled out the most unbelievable save of the night. The judges gave the edge, though, to Meents. Maximum Destruction nosed out Grave Digger 27 to 26 in the judging.

Pat Brown won the Formula USA Pro Quad main, but Tim Farr slipped past Korey Ellis on the final lap for second place, allowing Farr to claim the season points title.
