Moon Man is leading UMP points with a crate!

He is racing on a small budget and leading UMP points with a crate engine! You have to give credit where credit is due, he is getting it done this year with consitant runs on the bull rings here in the midwest! Glad to see him weekly at Belleville. Keep up the good work Jim!

It's not a easy thing to do with a big motor on these little bullrings around here let alone with a crate!!! I heard driver after driver say the crate cars are harder to driver cause of less horsepower to through it around. Best of luck the rest of the way

They may of titled this with crate engine... But it certainly isn't the same crate engine we see running in the UMP Crate Late Model division.... He's running the CT525 engine which straight out of the crate has another 125hp on the GM604 crate being run in the crate division. Plus, I don't think you can say Moonman's CT525 is exactly "right out of the crate"!!!

So what I can tell you is Moon's motor is in fact "out of the box" in fact his back up motor is still in the box... (or crate). He does recieve a weight break and also has a top notch "light weight part" program. Every nut, bolt and part on that car is designed for the sole purpose of being light (very light) and I mean everything. Running the 525 allows him to run a soft tire when everyone in the field is on a hard tire (huge money saving here). He is holding his own with top fives and tens with the supers but the bull rings are evening things out a little. Once we get deeper into the points and things shake out Moon is hoping for a top ten run. Jim has one of the smallest budgets of anyone that is even considering racing for points much less a living and is doing a great job. He is very knowledable about racing on dirt and works extremely hard at racing for a living. Moon-boots keep up the great work...

You have to inlighten me on how running a crate allows him to run softer tires then others.... Yes he gets a weight break, but its only 200 pounds.. Thats only give or take 50 pounds each wheel. Running crate motor take a " free" race car. Which means less grip and more wheel spin. Which builds heat in tires.

The whole 525 thing is a weird deal. People around here have been racing with less horsepower for years. So if I bring a dyno sheet to UMP saying i have 650hp do I get 100 pound weight break? Nope!! Where the tech for this engine, not accusing just asking. Im not saying he isnt having a great year. There just a lot of what ifs..

I believe a CT525 is also all aluminum. Helps to make the weight break work for you unlike a 602 or 604 which are much heavier.

$10,500 with all accessories... I almost went this way for 2012, but since I run at I-55 I would be out to lunch for the heat race... Now I'm out to lunch in the feature... lmao

Brandon Davis III just won back to back USMTS races last weekend with his CT525. They're stout motors to pull off that feat.

You can build a super engine for that putting out 650-700 + hp

Not any super motor that I have heard of... and if you did and it lasted you will need to freshen it every 20-25 nights...for $3500 minimum. Moon put close to 200 nights (not laps) on his last 525, just doing normal maintenance.

Ive got 2. with way under that in them.. The one a few years ago.i put 64 nights on. Its all about how who and how you do it.. Making a big deal out of nothing. Bobby Dauderman has won features at Highland and Belleville with a 604 and weighing 2400 lbs..

Not to discredit anyone's accomplishments, because I too am one of those guys who checks all of my point standings every Thursday. But this thread can be kind of misleading to someone who isn't very familiar with the inner workings of the racing world. Like someone said before, it is not the 604 or 602 crate engine that most people think of when you just say "crate engine.". Secondly, he has run more shows than just about anybody else on the list. If he keeps up his current per-night point average, he will wind up somewhere in the mid 30's after he hits his 35 nights and others start catching up. I too am kind of in the same boat. I'm not even close to leading the points, but if I hadn't run as many nights as I have this year so far, I wouldn't be anywhere near the top half of the list. If he steps up his game a little and stays up there, Great. I just feel that the end of May is a little premature to be bragging about point standings.

Your right, it's kinda early to brag as things will change, especially when the hell tour starts up. But the fact of the matter is, he is in the lead as of now. Get over it. Jealousy is also a killer, it adds to every day stress. Give the guy credit while he is doing good. Us local fans should be proud he is leading. I'm sure most you on here in awe is tri city fans. But, he still leading. And we should be giving him a pat on the back, unlike the sorry azz ump officials and the media. He should have been interviewed by now and put on a pedalstool for his accomplishments. Way to go Moonman, keep up the good work and keep having fun unlike most these guys on here whining

Moon continues to lead the UMP National Points going in to the Hell Tour with an 87 point lead over Kevin Weaver! He has held the lead now for four weeks in a row!

Yeah if Weaver had 7 more nights at his point average he'd have a 340 point lead. Early in the year its usually who runs the most. Its the replacement nights that decide it when it's close at the end.

For what I see he's not running against any competition (Belleville & Monkey City).
Take his ride to Tri-City or Pevely or any other good track and he'll get his azz waxed.
Not jealous just a fan in the stands. Hardly know the guy although I've seen him
race a couple of times. Seems like a big cry baby if he don't get his way. Just Saying.
