(Warrensburg) The hot and once again rainy weather this weekend was another challenge for Central Missouri Speedway during the Rib Crib Battle of the B-Mods Special on Saturday evening on the Kenny’s Tile sponsored track. With several local dirt tracks cancelled due to wet weather this weekend, 77 drivers made the trip to Warrensburg to enjoy another smooth racing surface along with a crowd of eager race fans ready to watch their favorite’s race for the checkered flag. Unfortunately, the annual B-modified special was rained out after the Street Stock, ULMA Late Model and rain-shortened Modified feature events. There were several surprises tonight including a welcome back to legendary Kansas City driver, Bobby Layne in A. J. Tice’s machine for the special B-modified event.

During a night of first wins for several drivers, Scotty Dukes of Odessa won his first CMS feature this year in the Street Stock division. During the ULMA late model feature event, it was a return to victory lane for the 2007 ULMA point’s champion Brett Rollert of Smithville winning feature number one at Central Missouri Speedway. Then the fans were ready to see if their favorite drivers would win the “mighty” modified feature event when Dean Wille of Warrensburg claimed his first feature of the year during the rain-shortened event. The track took on enough water to force a cancellation of the Rib Crib B-Modified special.

22 b-modified drivers registered in the pits to race for the $600 to win special and battled in three heats to fill out the 22-car starting lineup feature race. In heat race number one, Bobby Raybourn of Holden topped Brad Smith and Lucas Isaacs. In heat race two Michael Mullins of Kingsville won his second heat of the year over Mark Evinger and Chris Brockway. Heat race three was a barn burner with Bobby Layne taking the fortunate win away from Scotty Martin in second who was later disqualified. Michael King then moves up into second and D.J. Dumont takes third.

Martin and Bubba Kline were later disqualified for the night and will not be able to participate in the B- Mod special scheduled again for next weekend. All B- Modified drivers that qualified for the race on Saturday night can run the B-Mod special feature next weekend. There will not be any points awarded for this race next Saturday night with the remaining 20 cars qualified last weekend scheduled to start the Battle of the B-Mods special event next weekend.

The street stocks ran another exciting feature race which produced a non-yellow flag feature event on the smooth CMS racing surface. 16 drivers registered to race with cancer survivor, Anthony Whitham of Kansas City, Missouri taking the checkers for the first time this season in heat race number one. In heat race two, Jerry Schmidt of Independence takes the victory for his first win at CMS this season.

Schmidt led the 16-car field into the first turn with Scotty Dukes and Whitham close behind attempting to move up. Behind them was a sometimes three wide race between Brett Nail, Brian Johnson and Nick Bennet. They battled for the fourth position for several laps to the delight of the race fans. Nail had to pull off soon after with a flat tire to finish his night. Meanwhile Dukes passed Schmidt for the lead and Johnson moved up into the third position with his sites set for the lead. Dukes then holds the lead around some lapped traffic into victory lane with a tough pursuit by Schmidt for the second place finish. Johnson, who finishes in third, dedicated this race to his grandfather who recently passed away. Bennet again looks strong for a fourth place finish, Chad Eickleberry moves up late into fifth and Tammy Korff sixth.

Another good field of 12 ULMA late models signed into the pits for the evening ULMA races this weekend with Brett Rollert and Jason Bodenhamer of Centerview winning their respective heat races. Two other ULMA tracks had to cancel races this weekend due to weather with CMS the only track to racing for ULMA points.

Rollert commanded the early lead in the late model feature with some veteran skills around the high banks using middle to high groove lines. Mike Ryun also looked strong in second place, but could not challenge for the lead. David Angel and Jeremy Watts encountered some mechanical problems and departed early on. Larry Clawson Jr. from Pleasant Valley made his first ULMA feature appearance at CMS, but also had to leave with a possible mechanical issue. Jon Binning, the current CMS point’s leader moved up into third place with some solid driving around Allen Perryman. In the end it was Brett Rollert for his first CMS feature win this season with Ryun in second. Binning stayed in third, Randy Ainsworth for a solid fourth, Brett Woods with a late pass into fifth, Perryman sixth and Bob King in seventh for his first starts in the ULMA late model division this season.

27 talented modified drivers signed in for the weekly showcase in ‘mighty’ modified division and they put on quite a clinic during the four heat races to round out the 24-car feature event. Dean Wille from Warrensburg, Tim Karrick of Basehor, KS, Orrick driver Aaron Marrant, and Dennis Walrath of Clinton won their respective heat events to set the front rows of the feature field. In the B-main feature, Dave Meyer, Joey Lile, Joshua Stephens and Doug Walrath finished in the top four and transferred into the A-main feature.

The modifieds had a tough time starting the feature with several drivers leaving the racing surface. After 5 attempts the race was under way with Tim Karrick passing Dean Wille for the lead. Wille still had some good bite down low on his machine and passed Karrick in turn four on lap three when Karrick went high and slowed. On lap five Don Danner had to leave the track for unknown reasons. Travis Johnson also departed after some contact on lap six with Ed Griggs also spinning in turn four. Everyone avoided Griggs and after the re-start Aaron Marrant passed Wille for the lead this time on lap eight, but suddenly left the track with mechanical issues. Wille inherited the lead again as rain drops started to fall and Karrick, Jake Richards and Jim Moody pressing for the front spots. After several more laps the surface became too slick to race and was called as a completed feature. Wille wins his first at CMS this season with Karrick second, Jake Richards third, Moody fourth, Tom Charles for fifth and with a solid finish Richard Layne in sixth. The feature finish was based on the last completed lap as the checkers and yellow were flown by Hershel Thompson.

Next Saturday night will be Heartland Waste Race night in Warrensburg along with the completion of the Battle of the B- Mods special. Be sure to watch all four regular divisions racing for the double checkers on the CMS high banks next weekend. Pit gates open at 4:30 with admission gates opening at 5. Hot laps start at 7 and racing hits the track at 7:30. For track information and up to the minute race status call the track report line at (660) 747-2166.
