Moyer Beats The Field And The Rain To Notch Second World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series Victory!!!

Sarver,PA 4-29-05

Current World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series championship point leader Billy Moyer of Batesville,AR padded his point lead Friday winning the rain-shortened “Showdown At Sarvertown 50” at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver,PA Moyer bolted into the lead from his pole starting position and held off Darrell Lanigan through the first half of the scheduled 50-lapper before rain made the racing surface unsafe for further competition. The field stayed on the racetrack to try and save the surface but with radar showing no let up in the showers Series officials deemed the race complete with 25 of the 50 scheduled laps completed. Finishing third was World of Outlaws “Rookie of the Year” candidate Josh Richards with 18th starting Steve Francis fourth and Scott Bloomquist fifth. Rounding out the top ten finishers were sixth place finisher Rick Eckert followed by Tim McCreadie, Chub Frank, Dale McDowell and David Scott.

“Everything seemed to go just right tonight”, stated the happy winner. “We had a heck of a heat race with Rick (Eckert) and then we drew that 6 in the dash. We just thought we’d try some stuff in the dash and if we lose, we lose.” Actually, “Mr. Smooth” put on a heck of a drive in the dash just nipping McCreadie by .004 seconds aboard the J&J Steel/Banner Valley Hauling/McCarthy’s One Hour Heating and Cooling No. 21 Billy Moyer Racing C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Pro Power Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo to earn the pole for the main event.

“This thing came to life in that dash with what we did”, said Moyer. “You know they (officials) were in a hurry to run everything before the rain moved in so we really didn’t have time to do anything to the car after the dash. We pretty much left it alone except for making some minor adjustments. The thing was good. When the car is that good it’s fun. I sorta wish the race would’ve been 100 laps as good as this car was tonight.”

Moyer and McCreadie brought the 27 car starting field to the green flag before the very large crowd on hand at the ½ mile speedway with Moyer jumping out in front as the pair exited turn two. In all actuality the race was over at the point as Moyer quickly opened up some distance on McCreadie, Lanigan, Richards and Shane Clanton. By lap 5, Moyer’s lead was nearly 2 seconds over McCreadie who now had his hands full with Lanigan. Moyer caught the back end of the field on lap 6 but never had to worry about the lapped traffic as the first of five cautions flew when John Blankenship rolled to a stop in turn two.

The double-file restart allowed Moyer to pull away from the field leaving the racing behind him. McCreadie pushed up the track entering turn three after the restart allowing Lanigan and Richards to slip past as Bloomquist shot past Clanton for fifth. The caution would wave one lap later when Mike Blose spun to a stop in turn one.

Moyer again was the class of the field busting out to a sizeable advantage. By lap 14 McCreadie had worked his way back past Richards for the third spot but things would be slowed again when the yellow flag flew on lap 15. Exiting turn four several cars got together forcing Clanton to roll to a stop in turn one. That caution period soon became a red flag. The contact was hard enough to injure the Locust Grove,GA driver. Medical staff helped Clanton from his car with Clanton then walking to the pit area. A check-up by the medical personnel revealed a left shoulder injury with Clanton transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.

The top 10 restart order at this point showed Moyer with the lead, Lanigan second, McCreadie third, Richards fourth and Bloomquist fifth trailed by Eckert, Francis, Steve Shaver, Davey Johnson and Chub Frank. As before, Moyer was simply no match for anyone else but the battles behind him were nothing short of intense. Bloomquist shot to the top side of the multi-groove race track grabbing fourth from Richards on lap 16. The young 17 year-old came right back at the defending World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series champion grabbing the spot back on lap 18. The action would be slowed again when Alex Ferree spun in turn 2 to bring the caution back out.

Once the race restarted, Bloomquist and Richards went at it hard for the next two circuits trading the fourth spot until Bloomquist grabbed it back from Richards on lap 22. A light drizzle began to fall at this point but the moisture didn’t deter the drivers from really going at it. Lap 23 saw McCreadie, Bloomquist, Richards and Francis go four-wide for position with Richards snaring the third spot, Francis fourth and Bloomquist fifth as Eckert snuck past McCreadie for the sixth spot. With the drizzle now becoming a shower three more laps were completed reaching the halfway point. Rob Blair spun in turn one to bring out the caution as the field worked lap 26. Officials were informed by the drivers that the surface was too slick to continue during the caution period. The cars continued to circle the race track trying to save the surface but the rain grew harder. With the race officially at the halfway point the decision was made to checker the race at that point.

Lanigan was happy with the second place finish. “We never really ran that good up here last year. Tonight, we set a new track record during time trials, won our heat and placed second in the feature. We’ll take that and move on to the next one. You know, we moved in on Billy there a little bit and then the rain set in. I could tell Billy’s car was pushing a bit and ours was pretty good. It’s really hard to tell if we coulda got him. Maybe if we would’ve been able to get that final 25 laps in we may have had a shot but it’s really hard to say.”

For Richards, the third place finish was his best ever in World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series racing and “Kid Rocket” was pleased with his performance. “The car was awesome. It was extremely good. We ran good in the heat and won that and then I drove over my head in the dash and knocked it out of gear. In the feature I was between third and fifth the whole race and then got back into third after that last restart and it paid off.”

Ten drivers were under the previous Lernerville Speedway single-lap track record during time trials with Lanigan’s blistering run at 15.072 seconds at an average speed of 119.247mph the top mark. The one year-old record of 15.453 seconds was set in 2004 by Bart Hartman. Prior to last season, the single-lap track record stood since 1984 when Donnie Moran set the mark at 15.670 seconds.

Garland,PA driver David Scott put on a driving clinic in his qualifying heat race. Starting third in the second heat race, “Slow Ride” spun in turn two on the opening lap relegating him to the tail for the restart. Scott raced his way into the feature charging from the back of the field to the third and final transfer spot.

Raye Vest, the car owner for driver Rick Eckert, was noticeably absent from the pit area at Lernerville Speedway. Mr. Vest was hospitalized two weeks ago with double-pneumonia and after a weeks stay was released.
