The 29th Annual East Bay Winternationals held this past week at East Bay Raceway Park and sanctioned by the Lucas Oil NARA DirtCar Series was an immense success by every indication with a record car count, packed grandstands and a successful launch of the Lucas Oil NARA Dirt Car Series’ sophomore season. After the grand finale Saturday evening Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN emerged the point leader based on top finishes and two feature wins during the weeklong extravaganza. O’Neal was the only repeat winner during the Winternationals.

O’Neal leads the way with 940 points with Steve Francis in second only 20 points in arrears of O’Neal with 920 points. The remainder of the top ten in season points are Terry English (905), Rick Eckert (805), Billy Moyer (805), Dennis Erb, Jr. (790), Shannon Babb (790), Steve Shaver (775), Jimmy Mars (745) and Donnie Moran (735).

For the first time in Winternationals history one sanctioning body oversaw all six nights and series officials decided to drop the two worst finishes for each competitor.

“When we sat down and looked at doing all six nights at East Bay we wanted to make it fair to the drivers who are going to follow the Lucas Oil NARA Dirt Car Series and six consecutive nights of sanctioning races at East Bay could be tough for the outcome of the season so the fairest thing to do was drop everyone’s two worst finishes and then from that point on every race counts,” explained Spencer Wilson, President of the Lucas Oil NARA DirtCar Series on Monday afternoon.

Wilson also explained the system used for NARA provisionals, which are separate from the R.A.C.E. provisionals that were in place from the R.A.C.E. organization and the track.

“As for the provisionals the drivers only got points when they had an NARA provisionals available,” said Wilson. “Unless they had an NARA provisional available they didn’t get points. Like the night Shannon (Babb) got a R.A.C.E. provisional he was eligible for an NARA provisional but the way the points were stacked that particular night the provisionals didn’t work out to where he was in points so he lost his NARA provisional on that night but gained points. Unless they had a NARA provisional available they didn’t get points if put in through the R.A.C.E. provisionals and if they did receive points they weren’t eligible for one later in the week.”

“The way our provisionals works every driver who signed up on Monday is a member of NARA and receives one provisional and they receive a second provisional after the fifth attended race so basically we had ten different provisionals with NARA up until Saturday and Saturday was the only time we had the same person who had one earlier in the week.”

“The NARA provisionals are basically rewarded for attendance.”

Wilson also gave high marks to Al Varnadore, Todd Hutto and the rest of the East Bay Raceway staff and crew for helping make the Lucas Oil NARA Dirt Car Series second season kick-off such an astounding success.

“Absolutely we had a homerun, I think we did well and I’m proud of our group,” stated Wilson. “Everything went fantastic with Todd and Al and we developed a good relationship and actually they may come up during the summer when they get into their rainy season and give us a hand.”

Lucas Oil DirtCar Series President Spencer Wilson, P.R. Director & Series Announcer James Essex and Event Coordinator Rick Schwallie will be guests next Monday evening February 21 on the Dirt Nation radio program that airs from 8:00 – 10:00 PM EST at: www.racetalklive.com
