Another desperate attempt to grab new 'fans' while alienating the fans who supported NASCAR for years. Why not split the field into 4 heats and line them up based on the results? Also, no provisionals. I like the NHRA approach- go fast or go home no matter who you are. The next round of 'improvements' to the unnecessary Chase will probably be a bigger joke than this knockout qualifying idea. So thankful we can watch local tracks that race in the traditional way!
You are correct. NASCAR qualifying is boring. Part of the reason is there is no drama is due to the fact only 1 to 3 cars are actually competing to make the field. All the regulars are guaranteed a starting spot so all they are doing is trying to get the best pit stall. Another reason is the cars are so over-regulated that you already know what the fast time will be and there is no excitement about setting new track records. This may boost TV ratings for qualifying but I doubt we will see a big jump in ticket sales for the day before the race.
