Need Motor help

paul will

car owner
I am needing help from drivers, mechanics, helpers, anybody. We have a modified we are hoping someone on here can tell us what our problem is.
On our car our motor is missing coming out of the corners and when its get to the flag stand or half way it clears up and runs like a rocket. 3/8s mile track, When he goes back in the corner it starts missing real bad and clears up half way.
The first week we changed from a HEI dist. to a MSD. Still missing the next week
We changed changed to dart heads (was going to anyway) changed carbs and intake and MSDs again. Made it worse the following week.
At the track he blew out the fuel line and took the fuel filter out. Nope still did it bad.
We change the fuel pump this week and still missing in the garage at a high RPMs.
when we put the new fuel pump on it was pumping 15 pounds pressure so we put a fuel regulator on it to 8 pounds stll missing. I may have missed some things he did to it but hes trying.
What would you set the valves at for dart heads, we have no ideal what the cam is.
We are just looking for help and wondering if anybody else has had that problem, I would like to hear from anyone and will try anything before we pull the motor and hope its not a flat cam.
If we get it going I will post the answer to our problem. Thanks alot for helping Paul Will
You can call Josh at 573-330-8434 if you want to talk to him over the phone

Paul i always went with a general setting of .020 to .022 on a solid cam if i didnt know the lift. You should be close there. Since you went from hei to msd did you happen to change plug wires? I always ran good 8 mm wires with a msd. Wires are really put to work on a msd so since it got worse then might check them Also make sure you have a really good engine ground. Hei you can skate by with a decent ground but with a msd its gotta be really good Last thing what plugs you running? Id have to go through my papers but i ran a different heat range of plug with my dart's. Let me know if it helps. Good luck

Hey Paul it's Bobby Regot check the pick up tube and fittings in fuel cell. I had a fuel cell once that had a crack on the inside of fuel cell on the fitting and it was drawing air and motor wouldn't run right. Also had same problem wth crate motor two years ago and we had some bad fuel. It would b good to talk to it's bn years. Give me a call 314-852-9795

Double check your timing with a different timing light. Ran two and a half seasons with timing way off and what you explained is exactly what it did.

It sounds like the problem we encountered this yr..check the timing..ours was the harmonic balancer was stripped and on middle corner to exit it would throw the timing off and on the starts

Check the battery, shake it while its being tested. I had a friend that replaced everything in the ignition and fuel system. It turned out to be a battery that had a broken plate inside and was shorting out in the corner causing low voltage. It would test good until you shook it.

Lots of good suggestions I know firsthand how things like this can drive you nuts Good luck If you need help let us all know That is what is great about this forum Lots of good people on here and been through the in's and out's of it all I learn alot from this site myself

Check the wires going to you're toggle switches happened to me at Fredericktown one night wire was loose

Yea that might be something else Make sure your wires powering the msd is full battery voltage at all times Since you swapped ignition systems but use probably the same wires to power it might ck that Battery volt drops are notoriois on race cars

Well got some good answers I'll try to answer them real quick,
We run straight racing fuel,
we have set the valves at 20 and we put different wires on it and there 8mm, we haven't checked all the ground yet will be doing that next, we run NGK#8 plugs
Bobby I will call you Wed sometime thanks we did blow the line out and checked it over.
We are running 82 pill in both carbs we tried and Josh is going to put 78 in next, when he started it the other night the fumes was burning his eyes super bad.
If I set the timing but ear the timing light even won't show up on the balancer if we set it by the mark it just dies, we set it at 32 just incase it was advance time and it would veryly run. A buddy has a real fancy timing light and is going to bring it over and set it this week.
We changed the fuel pump and new one was pumping 15 pds pressure and we put a regulator on it and set it a 8 and still terrible.
The buddy who has the timing light said he thinks the key moved or something and throwing the time off or said the cam may be it.
I will put another battery in it this one I have now is new but you never know.
Josh said the battery post has a small cable running to the soilinoid and a larger one going to the starter hes going to replace that tommorrow. he switch the toggle switch no good.
Thanks everyone for the help we will be going thru all these suggestions and hopefully we will solve the problem, and I will let everyone no when we find the problem. Thanks again Paul Will

We had a so-so connection at the ign switch that was doing that. And everything else everyone suggested are great point outs. You didn't change gears did you?

Well thanks everybody for the help we think we figured it out maybe. We tried everything that was suggested and nothing worked so we took the cam out tonight and found out it was a isky cam and it was ground for a 1/2 mile banked track for a 4 bbl rpm range 3200 to 7800.When we bought the motor we had no idea on specs on it. we know it was on alcho. and raced around columbia. It makes since now that the car wouldnt come to life until after 3000 rpm now. Thanks for all the help. When we get it back together we will let you guys know how the first night goes.

Also MAKE SURE if you put the msd billet distributor in ALWAYS swap the springs under the rotor bug they are way to strong. It comes new with springs that are to stiff, and also other softer springs in the box. Put softest available. if not when you go to time it, it will not b the correct reading on your timing light until 3300-4600 rpm the soft springs will read a lot faster 1500-2500 rpm. Had that problem once and motor would studder very bad in corners plus run hot.
