NeSMITH CHEVROLET DLMS TRAVELS TO COLUMBUS SPEEDWAY FOR ROUND TWO

CARTERSVILLE, GA – The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Tour travels to Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS this Saturday afternoon for Round Two of the 2008 season in the 8th Annual Winter Classic with new faces at the top of the points list based on their success in the season opener at the Ice Bowl on January 6 at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL.

Royce Bray of Hull, GA is the point leader after winning the Ice Bowl race, and he is followed by the top Rookie of the Year candidate, Hunter Peacock of Macon, GA. In addition to finishing second to Bray, Peacock was also the fast qualifier among the 95 entrants with a unique home-built chassis that consists of three different chassis makes put together.

Peacock’s chassis features a 20-year-old Bullet center section with a Rocket front clip, and a GRT rear clip. Peacock led the first 17 laps of the Ice Bowl 40-lap race before Bray took over the point.

The 40-lap $2,500-to-win Winter Classic this Saturday afternoon at Columbus Speedway will also feature several drivers that have had past success at “The Baddest Bullring In The South” looking to move up in the points chase.

The 2007 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Championship Runner-Up Jay Blair of Angie, LA had two wins and four top five finishes in four starts last season in series competition at Columbus Speedway. The “Angie Assassin” is the defending champion of the Winter Classic.

Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs, GA won the final points race of the 2007 season last November at Columbus Speedway on his way to finishing third in the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National point chase. Following Rainey under the checkered flag last November was the 2007 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Rookie of the Year Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA.

Brindle had a fifth-place finish at the Ice Bowl in January, and another top five finish could set him up for a solid run at the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Championship. Brindle had three wins last season on his way to a fourth-place finish in the National point standings.

Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA had a sixth-place finish at Columbus Speedway last November, and he finished fifth in the National point standings. Chris Tays of Corinth, MS had his best finish of the season last November at Columbus Speedway with a third-place showing. The “Tazer” finished sixth in the 2007 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National points chase.

Steve Godsey of Bedford, IN is running for the 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Rookie of the Year honors, and he has had past success at Columbus Speedway running with the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series last season.

The 2007 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Indiana State Champion won the 2nd Annual Crate Racin’ USA Weekly Racing Series Fall Nationals Invitational Race and the Weekly Racing Series Race of Regions last November at Columbus Speedway. Godsey also has a pair of top ten finishes at Columbus Speedway in series National Tour competition.

Current NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS top ten drivers expected this Saturday afternoon at Columbus Speedway along with Bray, Peacock, and Brindle include Jordy Nipper of Gray, GA, Ted Lackey of Munford, AL, Billy Mayo of Cleveland, TN, Brian Connor of Martinez, GA, Terrance Nowell of Phenix City, AL, Shanon Buckingham of Morristown, TN, and Mike Boland of Cuba, AL.

Boland, a seven-time Mississippi State Late Model Champion, is another driver with past success in series competition at Columbus Speedway, as he took the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Tour win last September.

Other top entrants expected for round two this Saturday afternoon at Columbus Speedway include Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA, Jim Till of Greenville, AL, Frankie Beard of Hartwell, GA, Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS, Jamie Pickard of Columbus, MS, and Keith Freeman of Commerce, GA.

Turner and Till finished ninth and tenth respectively in the 2007 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National points, and Beard was the 2006 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS Rookie of the Year. Stokes, in addition to being the promoter at Columbus Speedway, is also running for the 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National title.

Pickard is the defending NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Track Champion at Columbus Speedway, and Freeman won the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Race of Champions last November at Columbus Speedway.

The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series will compete in Qualifying, Heat Races, and the 40-lap $2,500-to-win main event at Columbus Speedway this Saturday afternoon. Columbus Speedway will host an open practice for the 8th Annual Winter Classic on Friday with the gates opening at 2 p.m. and practice will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the gates at Columbus Speedway open at 9 a.m. with the drivers meeting set for 12:30 p.m., and racing is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Registration and Pre-Race Technical Inspection will be conducted between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Columbus Speedway is located seven miles east of Columbus, MS on U.S. Highway 82. Exit at Stokes Rd exit, then go left 1.5 miles north on Pleasant Hill Road, and then right on Lacy Road.
