Turbocharged V6 direct injection engines could power the Sprint Cup cars of the future it has been revealed. NASCAR has already started to consider the design of the Generation 7 car despite only having just introduced the Generation 6 cars. Robin Pemberton revealed “The questions we are asking ourselves right now are what does the Generation 7 engine look like? is it a direct injection engine? is it a V8? is it a V6? is it turbocharged? all of that stuff." Pat Suhy of GM said "We are not talking in great detail at the moment, we will be starting to discuss it seriously soon and I don’t think anything is off the table.”

Also on the table is a switch from frames built out of steel tubes to a DTM style hybrid chassis, half carbon fiber tub and half steel tube frame. Considering NASCAR has already announced a plan to run a North American DTM series starting in 2015, the success of that series could very well dictate whether or not this idea comes to fruition.

Believe it or not their are still a lot of people that do care. Yes Nascar has lost some of it's luster but, they still have a good following. The problem Nascar grew so, big so, fast they kept adding seats and now that the stands are half full at most of these races people think there is no one there but, in reality they may be getting 60, 70 to 100,000 people depending on the race and or tracks seating capacity. Now like anything else greed starts to take over and tickets sales sky rocketed and motels started raising their prices and making you buy a hole weekend and with this economy the way it is it's taking it's toll. Yes the races are not as good as they used to be but, that does not mean they can't get back to that but, they better get it together soon or you may just be right it might just die like Indy cars have.

I am one of the fans that NASCAR lost as they morphed into providing entertainment events instead of racing. There is no denying that what happens in NASCAR does trickle down through other series ('chase' formats, lucky dog free passes, Toyota) so I felt it was worthwhile to post this news here. If they implement that new frame I feel it will guarantee the only teams wealthy enough to compete will be Hendrick, Roush/Penske, and Gibbs. The rich will get richer and the little teams will vanish. I would like to see NASCAR require engines that are found in current passenger cars. It would be interesting to see the Ford teams use the Coyote 5.0 V-8 and EcoBoost 3.5 turbo V-6 on whatever track suits them best. Not sure what GM or Toyota has in that range but I'm sure NASCAR could find something from this decade that would fit the rules.

Well put Flying Penguin. Ford,GM and everyone else have used V-6s for years and NASCRAP is just now seeing thinking about the V-6??Anybody know a new car dealer were you can buy a new Ford,Gm etc that comes with a big block V-8 ,4 speed transmission and 4 doors??

My point here is NASCRAP is a joke The so called cars they race can not be purchase at any dealer If your going to race a Ford or GM etc then make it a Ford or GM NOT something NASCRAP dreams up. The COT car from NASCRAP will NEVER appear in a new car dealership
"Race on Sunday sell on Monday"
Someone wrote about the high cost will lead to just a few teams with lots of money winning the races. Hello, isn't that what NASCRAP is now??
I think it's also called "Start and park" for everyone else

Not all of the small teams are start and park entrants. Front Row Motorsports placed first and second at Talladega and they build their own chassis. I don't think a second tier team like that with 50 employees and 3 cars will exist in the 2017 scenario.

Just playing devil's advocate, but wouldn't you say that if Nascar ceased to exist that you could pretty much stick a fork in local racing? Since several drivers have affiliation with or outright own dirt tracks across the nation, do you think they will want to continue spending their savings trying to run or invest in a business that can hemorrhage cash at any time? I for one may not watch Nascar all of the time, but I certainly do not want it to go away and an effect on local racing.

Would not like to see NASCRAP go away
It is time for NASCRAP to stop playing God. Run the races with cars that look like a Ford,GM etc that fan can buy on Monday
Stop changing the rules each week
Print you rules in January and stick to them

Really a great post!

When you keep changing the rules almost monthly to keep changing the outcomes of races its not what its all about. Plus the little rewards for being the first car a lap down to be all of a sudden put on the lead lap has changed outcomes of races as well. Wont happen at a TRUE races...........your local racetracks! Thats where the true and blue races are nowadays

They don't run the COT cars stlmsr they are gen 6 cars and they look exactly like the make and model of car you would by except for the rear spoiler.I agree Nascar is killing it self in a bad way by catering to the big teams and hurting the small teams and i agree they should have a diff engine rule hell they should fig out a way to have a spending cap and make it to wear teams that are really small but have great drivers can compete at other places besides daytona and dega!!!!!!!

NASCAR committed suicide when they covered up the entertainment value with a decal.

The races are boring, the TV production is anemic, the announcers are nieve, ignorant, and staged yet every square inch of everything has a promotional sticker on it.
