Double points night could go long way in determining 2007 POWRi champions

MILLSTADT, Ill. (Aug. 27, 2007) – DuQuoin, Ill. has been synonymous with open-wheel racing for several years, and the O’Reilly POWRi National Midget and Micro-Sprint divisions will continue that tradition Saturday at the Southern Illinois Center.

Not only will drivers be gunning for high-paying victories, they’ll earn double points. The night could go far in determining the 2007 POWRi champions. Expected to be included in those feature starting lineups are the series’ respective leaders in feature victories, both of whom are on the verge of their first POWRi titles, as both seasons wind down. Brad Loyet (Sunset Hills, Mo.) and Dereck King (Vienna, Ill.) have each won races at the Southern Illinois Center previously, and could be threats to winning again this weekend.

Loyet’s efforts will be extremely important toward the Midget title. With four victories this season, Loyet is less than 300 points behind points leader and defending champion Brad Kuhn (Avon, Ind.) and Mike Hess (Petersburg, Ill.), who has led the championship standings for much of the season. However, due to other obligations, Kuhn and Hess are expected to miss this round. A top-five finish would vault Loyet into the lead with four races following DuQuoin.

Brett Anderson (Belleville, Ill.) and Dave Camfield Jr. round out the top five. A $2,000 payout will go to the winner of the 30-lap feature.

Having picked up $1,000 last weekend, King is fit to be crowned following his successful season so far. King swept last weekend’s races at St. Francois County Speedway in Farmington, Mo. and Washington (Mo.) Town and County Fair, and leads Tony Roney (Herculaneum, Ill.) by more than 600 points heading into this weekend. Daniel Robinson (Wayne City, Ill.), Ryan Guyett (Springfield, Ill.) and Austin Laskey round out the top five in Micro-Sprint points.

As with the last two Micro-Sprint races, a $1,000 share will go to the winner, as Southern Illinois Custon & Collision Center Inc. has agreed to sponsor the evening, which culminates with a 20-lap feature.

This is not the first time POWRi has sanctioned races at the Southern Illinois Center – located a stone’s throw from the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds’ Magic Mile. The series also runs at the sixth-mile indoor track during winter months. A strong turnout is not only expected among competitors but fans as well. The DuQuoin State Fair will be running throughout the weekend. A post-race party will also be among the festivities for competitors and fans.
