MILLSTADT, Ill. (Aug. 12, 2007) – O’Reilly POWRi National Midget Series points leaders Mike Hess (Petersburg, Ill.), Brad Kuhn (Avon, Ind.) and Brad Loyet (Sunset Hills, Mo.) will continue their points battle Friday at Macon (Ill.) Speedway, but they’ll have their hands full against fellow top Midget counterparts. Not just by numbers, but even more quality.

Jerry Coons Jr. (Tucson, Ariz.) and the rest of the USAC National Midget Car Series contingent will return to racing this week for the fourth and final co-sanctioned race this season. Coons has yet to win one of those co-sanctioned events this season, struggling in one of the races last month at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb.

Coons enter Macon as the point leader in USAC competition after the four-race “Indiana Midget Week,” which concluded Sunday evening. Coons has also competed in several POWRi-only shows, and is looking for his first series victory.

Hess, Kuhn and Loyet, who have all shared in the POWRi-USAC co-sanctioned races, have been the forces to deal with in POWRi all season. Hess has led the standings for more than three months with Loyet – who last week became the series season wins leader – also leading the points and running in the top three in points after every race this year. Although both drivers have endured difficult times – Hess running for different owners while his car and motor were in the shop and Loyet missing races after an accident – the two own seven victories between them.

Kuhn, the series defending champion, entered the season late but consistent finishes have him only 55 points behind Hess with seven races remaining. He is aiming to become the series’ only two-time champion. Kuhn is also third in USAC points. Brett Anderson (Belleville, Ill.) runs fourth in POWRi points, while Dave Camfield Jr. (Decatur, Ill.) has leapfrogged Hud Cone (Oakland City, Ind.) in points, running fifth. Cone is currently sixth.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (Olive Branch, Miss.) is the beneficiary of the POWRi-USAC races, having won two of the three heading into this weekend – McCool last month and the 30-lapper at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind. in May, and he is fourth in USAC points. Other USAC regulars looking to compete Friday include Darren Hagen (Riverside, Calif.), Kevin Swindell (Memphis, Tenn.) and Stenhouse’s teammate, Levi Jones (Olney, Ill.), whose car NASCAR Nextel Cup Series star Tony Stewart drove at Macon last month in the “Dana Godfrey Memorial.” A.J. Fike (Galesburg, Ill.) won that 30-lap race.

The POWRi 600cc mini-Sprints will also be in action Friday, with Dereck King (Vienna, Ill.) holding a strong 505-point advantage over Tony Roney (Herculaneum, Mo.).

Practice is scheduled for 6:00pm. while racing is expected to start at 7:00pm and a 30-lap feature concluding the evening’s festivities.
