CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Sunny skies and a record K-C Raceway crowd set the stage for dynamic racing during the Arizona Sportshirts 26th annual Dirt Track World Championship, where Moweaqua, Illinois driver Shannon Babb became only the sixth man ever to repeat in the 26-year history of the Dirt Track World Championship. Running door to door coming out of turn four, the 2002 Dirt track Champion Babb used his momentum to edge 2005 DTWC champ Scott Bloomquist by less than a car length at the wave of the checkered flag. The win was worth $50,000 to the winner along with an elite 26th edition champion's ring.
"I tell ya Scott has beaten me about every race this summer", gasped the winner Babb in victory lane. "The last five laps of several races all year long, he (Bloomquist) has been blowing my doors off. I didn't want to let this one go. This C.J. Rayburn/ J & J Steel/Car City/ Karl Chevrolet/Watters Autoland/Jay Dickens Racing Engines car treated us right tonight."
The last 15 laps, Babb, known as the Moweaqua Missile, blasted through the turns with his arch nemesis Bloomquist strapped right to his hind quarters.
The last five rounds were even closer as Bloomy inched ahead at different points of the apex, only to have Babb's momentum grant him the ever-slightest edge. It took every inch of 100 laps to decide the winner, but with real estate at a prime, Babb staked final claim on the $50,000 top prize and the deed to his second DTWC title.
"I guess these one day shows don't give me time to think about things, so I don't screw it up," laughed Babb. "I appreciate these fans. It's a good run for the end of the season. I am excited for the fans and excited for myself. It's something you can't read about, you can't see it on the internet, you gotta be here and live it. You just can't explain a deal as big as this. I would like to thank Carl Short and Dean Nardi for keeping this race alive, and it's an honor to be a repeat winner."
"K-C Raceway was fast anywhere I ran," added Babb. "But I was better in the middle and up high. I'm really glad we got this race in this weekend. The staff here did a tremendous job overcoming the bad weather and all the mud to get this show in."
Candidate for Governor of Ohio, and Ohio Congressman Ted Strickland, was the honorary flagman for the first heat event.
After six exciting heat races and three 20-lap B-mains, the field for the
2006 Dirt Track World Championship was set. Each heat race was like an all-star feature with cars from every national sanction represented. The track crew graded a huge ledge off turn two, and a large rut in turn three that groomed the track for three-wide racing which saw speeds approaching the track record throughout the racing event.
The heat winners were 2006 World of Outlaw champion Tim McCreadie, Steve Casebolt, Jr., Earl Pearson, Jr., Shannon Babb, Steve Francis, and Brady Smith. B-Main winners were Chris Combs, Aaron Bapst, and Steve Shaver.
The field, represented by 145 cars from 16 states, Australia, and Canada, was an international affair and included drivers that were champions from all factions of racing. The most notable of the group was Rushville, Indiana driver Tony Stewart, the defending Nextel Cup Champion. Stewart had a lock on a feature starting position, but a lapped car collected both Stewart and race-long leader Randy Weaver in the second heat.
The event was slated to be a three-day affair with Modified racing and Late Model racing overlapping on the Friday portion of the program. Several inches of rain Thursday, capped a ten-day period of ten-plus inches of rain that wiped out Thursday's portion of the program and made for treacherous movement on the K-C grounds. Ultimately, all Modifed racing was run Friday and all Late Model racing Saturday.
Fast time was set by former DTWC champion Donnie Moran of Dresden, Ohio who drew the number six inversion pill at the conclusion of time trials. Moran chartered the K-C highbanks with a 14:008 clocking, an average speed of 102 miles per hour.
After time trials the 2007 Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame class was introduced. The group was introduced by Stock Car Racing journalist Bill Holder, Lucas Oil Series' James Essex, and Dirt Track World Championship series announcer Petie Secret. Hall of fame inductees were Verlin Eakers, Gene Petro, David Spears, H.E. Vineyard, Herb Scott, Ralph Earnhardt, Mike and Mickey Swims, and Mike Jewell. All were drivers except for the Swims'
who founded the Hav-a-Tampa Series among other racing endeavors. The induction ceremony will be August 11, 2007 at Florence Speedway (KY)--Home of the Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame.
In the stunning 26-Car DTWC feature event, Brady Smith and Steve Francis led the field to starter Daryl Owens green flag. Smith took a sizeable lead, only to partially lose the handle on the turn four exit allowing Francis to lead the initial circuit. The field slowed on lap two, when several cars came together, but only the cars of Matt Miller and Josh McGuire came to a stop.
Like a fine wine, a vintage move from the collection of Francis'
Mopar-by-Stanton pushed the Colonel to the top spot for the next 14 rounds.
As if launched from a bazooka, Babb took command on lap 16. Francis fell back several car lengths until lap 21 when the Kentucky Colonel pulled alongside once again in a great two-wide battle for the point.
Kid Rocket Josh Richards then ignited a three-way battle, only to have his run put on hold with a lap 33 caution for Showtime Steve Shaver, who came to a stop in turn two before going pitside. Francis worked the inside groove to perfection, but Babb's momentum on the high side gave the Illinois driver the edge. A three-car entourage developed when Richards charged into the hunt. As fans came to their feet, cheering for one of the top three drivers, Clint Smith was working his way from 12th into the top five. But even more impressive was Darrell Lanigan, another Bluegrass driver, not letting grass grow under his mount. Lanigan had charged to seventh and with the second pack of cars bunched up in tight formation, was not too far from the leaders.
Babb legged out a slight edge, but a lap 44 bobble allowed Francis to once again pull alongside with Richards in tow. Former champion Babb developed a push in turns two and three that gave his pursuers hope. The rest of the pack started to close in on the leaders, when everyone got a breather as Brian Birkhoffer's mount came to a stall on the 62nd circuit. With clear sailing ahead, the triumvirate inched away, only to lose its youngest member on lap 69 after WoO champion Tim McCreadie from Watertown, NY came to a stop. Richards also exited the speedway with mechanical woes.
Eleventh place starter and 2005 DTWC champion Scott Bloomquist, sifted some voodoo dust, earning the "Voodoo Child" a magical charge to fifth. Another former champ Lanigan continued his charge from dead last (26th) to the top ten and a challenge for a top five. On the restart, (Clint) Smith bagged Francis, while one lap later Bloomquist and Earl Pearson, Jr. threaded the needle on either side around Francis on the backchute.
Babb adjusted to the push and appeared to be the fasted car on the track in the last quarter of the race. At that point the famed number 0 of Bloomquist shared bragging rights for the honor, gaining chunks of turf with every lap.
Bloomquist moved into third, working the low groove in one and two, and drifting to the wall on the turn four exit. Clint Smith pulled the trigger on a bullet-run to the rear quarters of Babb, who had led since lap 16.
If there was one person in Jim Nier's speedplant that didn't want to see yellow, it was Smith. After top fiver Steve Casebolt left on lap 84, Bloomquist blitzed Smith on the restart. Earl Pearson was also hot on his trail in turn two, and bumped the former runner-up Smith back to fourth. The pack jockeyed for position, but all eyes were on Bloomquist's run for the roses. The gutsy veteran pinched the inside rail, engaging in a torrid dual for number one. Babb held his own to lap 92 with Bloomquist his latch-key heir-apparent. But with no breathing room available, Babb momentarily yielded the lead to his challenger.
That set the stage for the exciting finale, one of the most memorable in the history of the Dirt Track World Championship. Rounding out the top ten behind Babb were Bloomquist, Earl Pearson, Clint Smith, Darrell Lanigan, Steve Francis, Chub Frank, Dennis Erb, Bart Hartman, and Chris Combs.
The ensuing Jim Dunn Memorial race sponsored by Dirt Late Model Magazine was no-less exciting with Jordan Bland leading through the first eight laps.
Although over-used, there was no other way to describe a three-wide sandwich that saw Rick Aukland, the Badlands Bandit, leap-frog both Bland and Brian Ruhlman to lead the last 21 laps. Local racer Mike Wilson opened up his throttle to nail down third, while close action back in the pack made the race a gem in the ringset of the DTWC 'Crown Jewel".
Aukland was a repeat winner, having also won the event in honor of the very first DTWC winner Jim Dunn. Rounding out the top ten were Brian Ruhlman, Mike Wilson, Chad Hina, Ron DeHaven, Kenny Jacobs,Josh Bocook, Wayne Chinn, Victor Lee, and Jordan Bland.

The Dirt Track World championship will once again return to K-C Raceway this same weekend in October in 2007.

DTWC Notes
All starts were Delaware style, double-file restarts.

Eldora Speedway's Larry Boos became race director when World of Outlaw head
man Brett Emrick, had to return home for a family emergency.

Announcers for the event, changing places in sychronized fashion at regular
intervals, were Rick Eshelman, Bruce Hines, Doc Richard, and Petie Secret.
The group was self-named the four horsemen.

Former Champions competing were Scott Bloomquist, Freddy Smith, Donnie
Moran, Rick Eckert, Darrell Lanigan, Shannon Babb, Bart Hartman, Steve
Francis, and John Mason.

The Jim Dunn Memorial (sponsored by Dirt Late Model Magazine) line-up is
drawn from a hat after the DTWC field is set, giving non-qualifiers a chance
at making their trip worthwhile, while at the same time honoring the very
first winner of the Dirt Track World Championship.

Candidate for Governor of Ohio, and Ohio Congressman Ted Strickland, was the
honorary flagman for the first heat event. Strickland was also a guest in
the press tower, where he visited with Frank Roush, brother of Jack Roush
infamous Nextel cup owner.

Wisconsin traveler Terry Casey and Knoxville Nationals champion Brian
Shirley were eliminated in a hard lap eight crash during the first heat.
Charleston, WV driver Tim Dohm elected to run the final seven laps with a
flat left front tire. Restarting fifth, he managed to place finish 11th to
make the B-main cut-off.

Randy Weaver, Crossville, TN met an ill-fate in the second heat. Leading the
first 13 laps of the 15 lap event, Weaver tangled with a lapped car and
hammered the front-stretch wall. Tony Stewart, who was running third, and
had just moved into second was collected in the melee. Stewart restarted at
the tail and came back to 11th to make the B-main cut-off, but later
analysis sidelined the Nextel star for the night.

Kenny Johnson, Parkersburg, WV, the former AMRA RWT champion had a top ten
time and led the first five laps of heat three only to lose a drive shaft.
At the same time former DTWC champion Darrell Lanigan came to a stop with
front end damage, but was able to make repairs and continue.

Josh McGuire, Grayson, KY, the nephew of legendary supermodified racer,
Wayne McGuire, put the family #41 in his first DTWC feature.

Former champion Freddy Smith, Seymour, TN is celebrating his 40th season
behind the wheel of a race car. Known as "The Southern Gentleman" Smith, is
well traveled with Kings Mountain, NC, Rocky Mountain, NC, Baton Rouge, LA,
and Knoxville, TN among his home bases. Smith is the only five-time DTWC
champion.

Three former DTWC champs, Freddy Smith, Kenucky Colonel Steve Francis, and
Scott Bloomquist were in the third heat. Only Francis and Blooquist advanced
to the "A".
