Tulsa Speedway
Friday, June 20, 2003

by Larry Olson; Mountain Home AR

TULSA OK. Bill Frye picked up his second O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series win of the season. Frye lead all 40 laps of the Charlie's Chicken 40, and ran away with the race. Frye picked up $3,000 for the win

Rex McCroskey was the races top qualifier, and held the pole. Terry Phillips was to his outside. That pair ran the first lap nose to tail, and made contact in turn one, starting the second lap. Phillips got turned around, and was relegated to the rear of the field.

Frye moved up to the outside front row position, and was off with the green, with McCroskey, Jeff Taylor, Charlie Randolph, and Mike Bowers falling in behind. Bowers got by Taylor and Randolph for the third spot on the second lap. The caution came out on lap three, for Dewaine Hottinger, who was stopped on the frontstretch.

Frye opened a five carlength lead on the restart. Jeff Floyd picked up fifth on lap five, then moved past Taylor for fourth on the backstretch on the next circuit. Frye was pacing the field by 10 carlengths by lap seven, and was a half straight up by lap 10.

The yellow flag waved on lap 16 for debris in turn four. Without getting in an official lap, the caution waved again for Charlie Randolph who had gotten turned around on the frontstretch. Taylor was fourth on the restart, and got by Bowers for third in turn four on lap 17. Taylor was on the move, and drove by McCroskey for second on the backstretch on lap 18.

Jeff Floyd brought out the caution on lap 19, as his right rear tire shredded. Floyd pitted for fresh rubber, and returned to the race. McCroskey was back around Taylor on the restart for second. Leslie Essary inherited fifth from Floyd's misfortune, and was dueling side by side with Terry Phillips for the spot, who had made his was back from the rear of the field in just 20 laps. Phillips got by Essary for fifth on lap 23.

Frye was once again pacing the field by 10 carlenghts by lap 25. Phillips was racing with Taylor and Bowers for third, when Taylor got his car sideways in turn three on lap 29, causing by he and Phillips to loose some momentum. Bowers secured third in the near altercation.

Frye was a half straightaway ahead by lap 30. Phillips got by Taylor for fourth in turn two on lap 33. Frye was looking at traffic by lap 35. The next three cars were tight, with McCroskey, Bowers, and Phillips nearly three wide as the laps wore down.

Bill Frye came home with the win, with Rex McCroskey, Mike Bowers, Terry Phillips, and Jeff Taylor making up the top five. Mike Brown, Leslie Essary, Jeff Floyd, Shane Essary, and Gary Stolba rounded out the top ten.

FAYETTEVILLE AR. Terry Phillips picked up feature win number six on the season in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series. Phillips moved by Gary Stolba on the 7th lap of the RTM Factory Direct 40 at the Thunder Valley Speedway, and wasn't challenged again. Phillips picked up another $3,000 payday and stretched his point lead.

Leslie Essary was the night's top qualifier, and held the pole with Stolba to his outside. Stolba won the race to the corner, taking the initial lead, with Essary, Justin Wells, Phillips, and Jeff Floyd in tow.

Phillips used the high side of the track to pass Wells in turn four on the third lap, then slipped under Essary for second in turn two on the next circuit.

Jeff Floyd moved past Wells for the fourth spot on lap four, then Jeff Taylor worked past Wells for fifth on lap five. Floyd got around Essary for third in turn four on lap six. Shane Diamant brought out the races first caution on the next lap, stalled on the frontstretch.

Jeff Taylor found the double-file restarts to his liking, and shot into third place. Jerry Buck also used the re-start to his advantage, claiming fifth on the restart. Phillips drove past Stolba for the lead in turn four on lap seven, then Floyd was back into the top five, past Buck, on the next go-round.

Floyd and Essary were racing side by side for fourth on lap nine, before Jerry Walker brought out the second, and final caution on lap 10, as he got turned around on the backstretch.

Taylor vaulted past Stolba for second place on the restart. Floyd worked past Essary for fourth on lap 11. Out front, Phillips was already 15 carlenghts ahead of the field by lap 12, and had checked out to a half straightaway advantage by lap 15.

Floyd was dueling with Stolba for third on lap 16, and Phillips was seeing traffic by the halfway point in the race. Floyd gained the third spot, past Stolba in turn two on lap 21. Phillips was facing four cars racing for position by lap 24, but had expanded his lead to a full straightaway by lap 25.

Floyd and Taylor raced for second, side by side , with Floyd getting by for second in turn two on lap 30. Terry Phillips continued to dominate the race, lapping cars until he'd lapped all the way up to 10th place when the checkered flag fell.

Terry Phillips came home with the convincing win, with Jeff Floyd, Jeff Taylor, Gary Stolba, and Jerry Buck making up the top five. Bill Frye, Leslie Essary, Justin Wells, Mike Brown, and Shane Essary rounded out the top ten.
