Robinsonville MS. Participants, fans, friends, and family of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series gathered Friday, December 13 at the Hollywood Hotel and Casino to celebrate the 2002 racing season. For the second year in a row, Bill Frye sat at the head table, and recieved the accolades that his second consecutive championship afforded him.

Series Announcer, Chris Rushin greeted the crowd of over 200, then blessed the meal. After feasting on the magnificant dinner the staff of the Hollywood prepaired, Mooney Starr took the stage to begin the nights presentations.

Starr recognized all the track promoters that were in attendance that had hosted events in 2002. Starr then turned the microphone over to Kevin Shaw, representing Larry Shaw Race Cars. Shaw gave plaques to David Gibson, and Jeff Taylor, who ran Larry Shaw prepaired Rockets during the 2002 season. Shaw also presented Mooney and Connie Starr with a plaque of appreciation for the series.

Russell Landrum of Landrum Spring Service took the microphone and presented Jeff Floyd with a check for $500 and Jeff Taylor a check for $1,500 for their participation in Landrum's contingency program.

Andy May of M & M Racing Fuel announced that he will become an Associate Sponsor of the Mid-America Racing Series in 2003, and will pay the top finishing Turbo Blue Fuel user $100 per event. May also presented Jeff Taylor with a guift certificate worth $500 for Turbo Blue Racing Fuels for Taylor's participation with May during 2002.

Mooney Starr went back to the microphone, and thanked Kevin Greegan who represented O'Reilly. Starr then presented representatives of the Corperate Sponsors, and the Associate Sponsors with plaques of appreciation.

Starr presented Jim Kuntz of Kuntz and Co. with the 2002 Engine Builder Championship. Starr then presented Joe Garrison of GRT Race Cars with his third consecutive Chassis Builder's Championship.

Starr and Jim Kuntz presented the top three M.A.R.S. Rookies with Coats, Trophies and Checks. Joey Mack, rookie champion, also recieved a custom painted helmet of trophy quality.

Starr presented David Gibson with the Sportsman Ship Award. Bill Frye claimed the Hard Charger Award, and Terry Phillips recieved the pole award for 2002.

Starr presented the Boyd Built Most Improved Driver award to Dewaine Hottinger. Hottinger recieved an eight foot sheet metal break from Boyd Built to go along with his trophy. The retail value of the break is $1,800. Joey Mack recieved $1,000 towards uniforms from Raceday Embroidery for the Raceday Crew of the Year award.

Starr then distributed the $109,350 in cash and contingency point fund awards to the Top 15 finishers in 2002.

The breakdown of the awards is as follows.

8) Joey Mack, $8,000 ($4,000 from MARS, $3,000 from Kuntz, $1,000 from Raceday)
9) Dewaine Hottinger, $6,550 ($3,750 from MARS, $1,000 from Kuntz, $1,800 from Boyd Built)
10) Gary Stolba, $3,800 ($3,500 from MARS, $300 from Hatfield)
11) Wendell Wallace, $3,400
12) Donnie Barnhart, $3,300

Starr concluded the evening by revealing that 2003's schedule is about 75% finished, and will include at least two $10,000 to win two day races in a schedule that Starr said would feature nearly 40 events. Starr released the 2003 rule books to those in attendance, and then said that 2003's point fund would pay the series winner $30,000 and still pay the top 15 in points.

Title Sponsor for the 2002 Mid-America Racing Series is O’Reilly Auto Parts. Rookie of the Year sponsor for 2002 is Kuntz & Co. Performance and Balancing.

Major Corporate Sponsors for the 2002 M.A.R.S. season are Competition Cams, Rinehart Trucking, GRT Race Cars, Hoosier Racing Tires, Larry Shaw Race Cars, Schoenfeld Headers, and Turbo Blue Racing Fuel.

Turbo Blue is the official racing fuel for the Mid-America Racing Series.
