“6th Annual Masters” At Cedar Lake!!!
New Richmond,WI 6-19-04
By Bret Emrick
Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville,FL captured the Stacker2® Xtreme DirtCar Series/Northern Xtreme DirtCar Series co-sanctioned “6th Annual Masters” event Saturday at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond,WI while Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound,WI was the high-point driver over the two nights of racing action to claim the title of the “2004 Masters” champion.
Pearson Jr. started from the outside front row in the $10,000 to win main event and tracked down early race leader Donnie Moran in lapped traffic to take the lead on lap 20. Once in front, the driver of the Lucas Oil/Dunn-Benson Ford No. 1 Team L Rocket Chassis/Wallace Racing Engines Ford Taurus never looked back in the non-stop feature besting Moran by 1 second to score his second Stacker2® XDCS victory of the season.
Mars, who had won the previous night’s racing Friday, finished in the third spot Saturday in his Stacker2®/Heeg Well Drilling/Deppe Enterprises No. 28M Jimmy Mars Racing MasterSbilt Race Cars/Pro Power Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo. With the victory Friday and the third place finish Saturday, Mars scored 4 more points than Brian Birkhofer over the two nights of racing to claim the “2004 Masters” title and the $5,000 bonus that went with it.
“Jimmy was so strong last night running the bottom groove that we decided today that was going to be our game plan for tonight,” said Pearson Jr. “Donnie was running a great race using the middle groove and when we got into the lapped traffic I told myself to stay on the bottom and it worked out. The race track both nights was just absolutely perfect and I hope the fans enjoyed what they saw. The Goodyear Eagles worked flawlessly for us and most everybody. A lot of people were thinking the track would lock down but these Goodyear Eagles don’t do that to a race track. Two nights of great racing with plenty of action for the fans. It doesn’t get any better than that. I can’t wait to get back here in August for the ‘USA Nationals’.”
Mars was very happy with his week-end as well stating, “I want to congratulate Earl and his guy’s on winning. They had their car just perfect tonight. Earl busted the track record tonight with a lap I thought I’d never see here. For him to turn a 13.3 is unbelievable. I think the fastest I ever turned a lap here was a 13.5. Man, was this place fast tonight. I really think if we wouldn’t have broken the rear-end during the YJ Stinger dash while leading it might’ve been a different story but that’s all hindsight. I’m just happy that we got the ‘Masters’ title and the fans got to see two great nights of racing. My hats off to the Cedar Lake staff for giving us a great racetrack both nights. And, I can’t say enough about Stacker2®, Goodyear and all of the series sponsors who have made this possible for all of us. Usually when you have two nights of racing the track will bolt down but every race we’ve run this year the track has never done that with these Goodyear Eagles. What a great tire!”
Steve Shaver rode home fourth with Birkhofer finishing fifth and Eddie Carrier Jr. sixth, the last car on the lead lap. Darren Miller, who started 19th, rode home seventh with Shane Clanton eighth, 16th starting Billy Drake ninth and 15th starting Matt Miller tenth.
The main event went caution free taking 10 minutes and 20 seconds to complete and all 28 starters finished the race.
Moran and Pearson Jr. brought the field to the green flag with Moran winning the drag race off of turn two over Pearson Jr. Shaver held the third spot at the end of the first lap trailed by Mitch Johnson and Carrier Jr. Moran opened up a two car length lead over Pearson Jr. by lap 5 and entered lapped traffic three laps later. Moran worked his way past the backmarkers but by lap 15 saw his frentic pace slowed somewhat allowing Pearson Jr. to move to within a car length of the leader. Working lap 20 Pearson Jr. kept his car to the low side of the lightning fast speedway as Moran ran the middle groove. Pearson Jr. passed Moran exiting turn four to grab the lead which he would never give up.
At the halfway mark Pearson Jr. had a three car length lead on Moran while Shaver sat third nearly a straightaway behind the two front runners with Mars fourth and Birkhofer fifth followed by Carrier Jr., Johnson, Clanton, Ray Cook and Darren Miller. With 20 to go Pearson Jr. had two lapped cars separating him from Moran. As the race wore on Pearson Jr. continued his torrid pace and with 5 laps to go Pearson Jr. had lapped up to the sixth place car of Carrier Jr.
The $42,000 event attracted 67 cars to the high-banked 3/8ths mile speedway with Pearson Jr. earning his seventh Ringers Gloves Time Trials Fast Qualifier award with a new track record of 13.379 seconds. Pearson Jr. also captured the MSD Ignition/Mason Racin’,Inc. heat race while Shaver captured the JE Pistons heat, Moran the Wrisco Industries heat and Carrier Jr. the Bert Transmission heat. Mars and Johnson captured their respective heat races as well. Darren Miller won the Sunoco Race Fuels “B” Main with the other two “B” Mains falling to John Kaanta and Brian Harris while Moran copped the YJ Stinger Extreme Energy Drink Dash.
The event was taped before the Speed Channel cameras and will be broadcast Saturday, July 17 at 3:00pm EDT on Speed Channel. The Stacker2® XDCS will team up with the Southern Xtreme DirtCar Series Saturday, June 26 at Wythe Raceway in Wytheville,VA for the $10,000 to win “Battle Of The Blue Ridge 50”.
