(Warrensburg, MO) Central Missouri Speedway dodged a late afternoon rain shower this weekend when the skies finally cleared after fans and drivers were settling into their race preparations in Warrensburg. The loyal race fans and drivers wait for this special event each year and were not disappointed even after a delay for the unexpected weather. The crown event for modified drivers in the surrounding area is the annual Tom Wilson Memorial $5,000-to-win special feature attracting drivers this year from as far away as Minnesota.
A total of 80 cars registered into the packed pit area with 'Mighty’ Modifieds, ULMA Late Models and Street Stocks. Modified drivers qualified for the inside row on Friday Night with Chad Lyle taking the pole starting spot. On Saturday night the final 12 drivers qualified for the outside row starting positions during a 20 car scramble to sort out remaining starting field for the $40,000 purse with over $5,000 to the winner.

Street Stocks were part of the racing program with 11 drivers registered to compete in two heat races to determine the starting positions for their feature. During the opening heat race Chad Eickelberry crossed the finish line first with his fourth heat win with Nic Bennett in second. In heat race two, Brian ‘Back in Black” Johnson takes his seventh of the year for the win with Anthony Whitham in the second spot.
With the feature line-up set, Eickleberry and Johnson started the 15-lap feature event with Johnson in the early lead, but Eickelberry had a low line move around Johnson before a yellow flag was flown for a Michael Mullins spin in turn four. After the yellow, Johnson started to walk away from the field with Eickleberry attempting to find a line to work up to Johnson. On lap 12, Whitham has problems with a flat tire and has to leave the track. Johnson hangs on in the end into victory lane for his fifth feature win this season. Eickleberry finishes strong in second followed by Herb Dannar, Nic Bennett and Tammy Korff rounding out the top five.

The ULMA Late Models had another large field of 18 drivers in the pits ready to race for the starting spots in the feature through three heat races. In heat race one it was Robbie Test for his first heat win at CMS ahead of Danny Lorton in second. Heat number two had David Barker taking the checkers with Kevin Coyne in second. Heat race three has some exciting action with Bob Test for his second win crossing the line ahead of David Hartsell.
Robbie Test and Barker led the field to the green flag with Barker charging into the low side on turn four the early lead. The late model drivers settled into a good run until John Pipes had some tough luck when he ended up spinning into the muck inside the front straight-away. Barker, the race leader at the time, also had to pull off the track with mechanical problems. Then Kevin Kaiser works his way to the front after a third row inside starting position. Kaiser was on the high side of the track with Test protecting the low side. Kaiser but could not pull out the victory with Robbie Test taking the checkers for his first ULMA victory at CMS. Kaiser in second, Bob Test, third, Hartsell has his best finish in fourth and Danny Lorton in fifth completing the top five.

The 'Mighty' Modifieds once again made this night one to remember with 51 drivers registered for the big money payout with four heat races, two b-mains and a scramble while using passing points in the heats to set the field for the special feature. The opening heat had Jason Thompson across the finish line first with ‘Movin’ Dave Meyer in second. In heat number two, Darren Shore takes the checkered flag ahead of Tim Karrick who moved up from a ninth place starting spot. . The third heat was another strong one with Terry Schultz besting Matt Dotson. In heat four Johnny Fennewald and a previous CMS feature winner, Jim Moody cross the finish line for the top two spots.

The modified drivers later contested their two 15-lap b-main events with four more cars transferring into the modified 20-lap scramble later in the evening. In the first b-main, Warrensburg driver, Dean Wille and Steven Glenn battled for positions into the scramble. The second b-main was another side-by-side race for the two transfer positions with Terry Phillips starting on the last row into first place with Chase Junghans taking the final spots to transfer into the scramble.

Twenty cars started the scramble for the final 12 outside row starting positions for the special feature event and a guarantee of at least a $1,000 payday. Early on Dustin Boney takes the lead after starting in row three. Jason Thompson also follows him up to the front. On lap 17, Jim Moody blows an engine after it appeared he had a potential top five finish. Local favorite, Dave Meyer also has problems and had to take his car to the pits. Boney crosses the line in first, Thompson second, CMS points’ leader Aaron Marrant, third and Terry Phillips in fourth after an 18 th place starting position. Terry Schultz finishes in fifth followed by the remaining qualifiers; Tim Karrick, Matt Dotson, Grant Junghans, Darren Shore, Johnny Fennewald, Darren Bennett and Steven Glenn.

The Modified special event started with 24 drivers for the 40-lap feature with Chad Lyle and Dustin Boney leading the field to the green flag start with the fans cheering on their favorite drivers. Boney dives into the early lead to settle into a pace to complete the feature. Behind Boney, Lyle and Thompson work the track to see if a line would work for them to move up into the top spot. Meanwhile Terry Phillips starts to pick off positions one by one so by lap 12 he moves up into third place. Terry Schultz starts to work the high-side for traction and moves into the top five along with a fast paced Justin Boney. At the half way point on lap twenty, Phillips moves into second with Dustin Boney still in the lead. After hitting some lapped traffic around lap 25, Phillips patiently waits to make his move around Boney. On lap thirty, he does make his move into the lead and never looks back for the $5,500 Tom Wilson Memorial victory. Boney finishes a strong second with his brother Justin Boney for a well deserved third, Terry Schultz fourth using the high-side traction and Jason Thompson in fifth.

The amazing story surrounding Phillips was the earlier Iowa MLRA late model race cancellation and his long trip to CMS. His modified was towed by his crew in from Springfield and arrived at the track as the rain started to fall. The subsequent rain delay gave Phillips time to add sheet metal and other parts to his modified so he could start in the second heat race. After his car broke in his heat race, he had to qualify through the second b-main into the scramble to start the feature in the eighth place position. Certainly a night to remember for the Terry Phillips racing team with the Tom Wilson Memorial victory lane celebration.

Next Saturday the weekly race program continues into the championship chase with the Modifieds, ULMA Late Models, Street Stocks and B-Modifieds on 98.5 the Bar Race night. Pit gates open at 4:30 PM with Grandstands admission beginning at 5, the driver's meeting begins at 6:30, Hot Laps start at 7 with racing following at 7:30. CMS is located approximately 4 miles north of Warrensburg from the junction of Highways 50 and 13 or coming from the I-70 area, exit at the Higginsville exit and travel south on Highway 13 for about 14 miles.
