Terry Phillips wins the 6th annual Doug Murphrey Memorial Modified race in Vivian, Louisiana.
Things got a little 'heated' at Ark-La-Tex Speedway!
A late race caution flag set up a 3-lap shootout for the top 4 drivers at the time: Kelly Shryock, Phillips, Jason Hughes and the only 3-time winner of this event, Chris Henigan. (The race only had 4 cautions - lap 8, lap 29, lap 45 and lap 47.) Before those last 2 caution flags, Shryock who led 49 laps in the event, had built a huge lead but the battle for second behind him was intense and 3-wide at times. Phillips was just barely scored in second ahead of Hughes on the lap prior to the final caution and chose the outside lane of the second row behind Shryock. In dirt track 'diamond restart' rules, the leader gets the front row all to his self with side-by-side rows lined behind him. 2nd place chooses if he wants inside or outside. The preferred line was the outside but Henigan had just taken 4th away from pole sitter Chris Brown while using the inside lane mostly to advance from his 8th starting spot.
After going back green, Phillips had his hands full on lap 48 with Hughes who was refusing to budge in the middle lane and now Henigan who was going to the inside of Hughes in the corners. On the 49th lap, Phillips was finally able to shake them off and focus on Shryock. When they took the white flag, it was down to a two-car race with Phillips now running to the inside of Shryock in the corners and Shryock using the momentum of the outside lane to pull ahead on the straights. In turns one and two on the last lap, the only maneuver left for Phillips was to try a slide-pass. He did off turn two but not without some slight bumper contact that lit a fire under Shryock.
As the pair raced into turns 3 and 4 for the final time, Shryock drove in hard to the inside of Phillips. It didn't stick and he skated up the track and slammed doors with Phillips with Phillips then hitting the fronstretch wall off turn four with the checkers waving ahead. Phillips ended up beating Shryock by half-a-car length to the finish line and it was the only lap he led. On the cool down lap, things didn't 'cool off' much as Shryock made contact again with Phillips in turn three. Just like in NASCAR, you are not supposed to make contact with another car under yellow flag conditions or after a race is over. Shryock was initially given a black flag for his actions but was later overturned and he was paid for second. Both cars went to victory lane and both crews arrived and needless to say, it led to a few tense moments but when things settled down, Shryock took his #3 car to the pits and the victory lane celebration began for Phillips and the #75 team.
In victory lane, Phillips said, "It was just hard racing. That's what your supposed to do on the last lap when it's $10,000 to win. Give the fans a show." It was also brought to Terry's attention in his victory lane interview which was taking place around 12:15 on June 3rd now, that thirty years earlier on June 3rd, 1982, his legendary father Larry Phillips, also from Springfield, was in Texas winning a big race. "I didn't realize that but that makes this even more special. I have a memorial race for my father that's very important to me too and it's neat to win this memorial race and support the Murphrey family on their night." The Larry Phillips Memorial is a big Late Model race that takes place at Springfield Raceway in Missouri. This year, the date is Saturday, September 15th.
