FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Amarillo, Texas – August 23, 2014 - Dan Powers of Wichita, Kansas made the six hour tow a profitable one as he picked up his second straight National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products modified feature victory in a row, this coming on Saturday night as the tour made their annual trip to Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas.
It was an “all NCRA touring regular” front row with Powers and Kirby Robe starting ahead of the twenty-four car field yet that would change quickly as Robe spun in turn two at the start. It took three more complete restarts before racing action finally went green and when it did, Powers jumped into the lead as the field finally completed a lap.
Dustin Austin, who took over the outside front row starting position after Robe’s spin, tucked in behind the leader as Powers would quickly build up to a half stretch lead by lap five. Chris Dawson, Alan Sharpensteen and Jason McGehee were your top five for the first quarter of the race when Powers began reaching the slower cars on lap eleven. His pace would slow one last time as the final caution of the night fell when Logan Robertson spun in turn two.
Despite a double file final restart, Powers took off from his preferred bottom line around the three-eighths mile track and once again throttled his way back to a comfortable half stretch lead. Dawson, who started eighth, would dispose of Austin on the restart for the runner up position but could not get any closer than six car lengths to the leader as the slower cars were once again approached, this time with three laps to go.
But there was no stopping Powers on this night as cruised the rest of the way to claim his third career series victory and a $1000 paycheck plus an extra $100 courtesy of Barry Weaver and Triple AAA Windshield out of Amarillo.. Dawson settled for second while Austin came home third. Dee Gossett started ninth and came home fourth while McGehee brought home a fifth place finish for NCRA.
The four, eight lap heat races for the 28 car field were won by Alan Sharpensteen, Powers, McGehee and Robe while Matt Newkirk and Mike Stroud took home the two, ten lap “B” features.
Coming into the night’s racing action, Powers and Nebraska veteran Jon Thompson came in tied for the runner up position in the 2014 point chase, both twenty points behind two-time and defending champion Marc Hurd. These drivers and more will continue their assault on the championship next Labor Day weekend as the tour makes their annual holiday appearance atop the Belleville High Banks Speedway in Belleville, Kansas on Sunday night, August 31. For this event, USRA rules will also be welcome.
