UMP Modifieds Took the Stage Sunday Three Times

It was an ideal Sunday night for racing at the Quad City Raceway. Thirty Four UMP Modifieds checked in to do battle for the triple features. Cars were on hand from here in the Quad Cities, and as far as Michigan. The IMCA Late Models were also on hand to do battle in a Hall of Fame qualifier. Fifteen Late Models made the call on night.
First of the UMP Modifieds had time trials. Manhattan Illinois driver Mike Spatola set quick time with a lap of 15.033. There were four heat races for the modifieds The races were captured by Mike Spatola, Gary Cook Jr, Kevin Weaver, and Jeff Morris. The 2 consis were won by Michigan driver Marc Kurth and local driver Andy Warner, who picked up his first checker flag in a modified. In the first 20 lap, $1000 to feature, Gibson City Illinois driver Kevin Weaver would start 4th and quickly make his way to the race lead. Weave would go on to take the first feature. Mike Spatola would fish second and Gary Cook Jr was 3rd. Billy Tuckwell, driving Gary Cook Jr’s back up car was 4th, and Milo Veloz Jr rounded out the top five. In feature number two, the top twelve from the first feature were inverted, putting Kevin Weaver starting 12th. Craig Crawford used his front spot to take the early race lead, then on lap 4 Mt. Olive Illinois driver Tim Hancock would get underneath Crawford and take the race lead. Weaver quickly made his way to the front catching Hancock with 5 laps to go, but could not get by him. Tim Hancock captured the $1000 to win 2nd feature. Kevin Weaver would have to settle for second, with Jeff Leka, John McCaul, and Gary Cook Jr rounding out your top 5. In the 3rd feature event, the cars were lined by the first two feature finishes, with best fishers starting up front. The top 4 were inverted. At the drop of the green flag Mike Spatola grabbed the race lead. Then him and Gary Cook jr would pull along the side of Spatola, actually leading a few laps, but at the finish Spatola would capture his first ever feature win and Quad City Raceway by about a 1/4 of a car length over Cook Jr. Tim Hancock would finish 3rd, and Jeff Leka, and Weaver rounded out the top 5.
In the IMCA Late Models heat races were won by Eric Sanders and Nate Buesling. The dash was won by Nate Buesling too. In the 25 lap feature event, Nat Buesling wa syour early race leader, but on lap 3 much to the delight of the big crowd, Gary Webb worked himself into the race lead. Webb would lead until lap 8 when dead last starting Doug Nigh would slip under the Hall of Fame driver and take the lead and go on to capture his first ever win at Quad City Raceway in a late model. Webb still finish 2nd, and Stephan Kammerrer who went to the pits halfway thru the race would charge all the back using the top of the race track for 3rd spot. Nate Buesling and Todd Malmstrom rounded out the top five.
Racing action continues this coming Sunday night September 13th with UAW night the races. All five classes will be on hand featuring Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders, and the Mod-Lites. Gates and stands will open at 4pm, hot laps at 5:30pm and racing set to get underway at 6pm.
