Season and Track Champions Crowned at Quincy Raceways

By Jack Walbring

The 2009 IMCA Speedway Motors and UMP points racing season came to a much anticipated close on Sunday, August 30 at Quincy Raceways but some of the results were not as they appeared as the checkered flag fell. The tech area provided just as much drama as the action on the track did as not one but two Season Championship Feature winners were disqualified after their feature events were completed.

The Budweiser IMCA Late Model Season Championship Feature event was started heads up by the points standings with Lonnie Bailey on the pole and Justin Reed on his outside. Reed was eight markers behind Bailey as the feature event started and needed to take the win with Bailey having problems to take the Track Points Championship and Reed did all he could do to make it happen as he jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag and set sail over the rest of the field. Bailey held the second position behind Reed until the twenty first lap when Mark Burgtorf took over second coming off turn four. Burgtorf closed on Reed but was only able to get within a half second of the leader as the checkered flag fell on the thirtieth lap with Reed claiming the Season Championship Feature event win. Bailey patiently held onto third followed by Joey Gower in fourth and Jason Perry in fifth. Jerry Weisenberger and Clint Kirkham were the heat race winners.

Bailey with his third place finish claimed the Track Points Championship by six points over Justin Reed followed by Mark Burgtorf another fourteen points back in the third position. Amazingly, Bailey now has won two Track Championships this year without winning a feature event at Quincy or 34 Raceway, a feat that reflects his consistent high finishes this season.

Whenever Michael Long has shown up to compete in the Miller Lite UMP Modifieds it usually has been a bad omen for the rest of the field. Steven DeLonjay and David Wietholder started the twenty five lap Season Championship Feature event on the front row and DeLonjay made good use of that as he jumped out into the early lead and held on for the first five laps. Donovan Lodge wrangled the lead away on the sixth circuit and kept it until Michael Long came from his fifth row starting spot to climb into the lead on the eleventh circuit. Long held tough through a series of caution periods to take the win with Lodge keeping pace in the second position followed by Vance Wilson in third, Wietholder in fourth and Trent Grotz in fifth. Wietholder, Meyer and Dunker took the heat race victories with Robbie Reed scoring the checkered flag in the B-Main.

Justin Reed had a 1063 to 1006 point lead over Steven DeLonjay going into the Season Championship night for the Miller Lite UMP Modifieds and the margin remained just about at that margin as both Reed and DeLonjay suffered problems late in the feature event with Reed being scored in sixteenth and DeLonjay in seventeenth in the final rundown. Reed closed out the Track Points Championship with a margin over 1103 to DeLonjay’s 1045 to take his first ever Track Points Championship.

The Triple R Performance Engines IMCA Stock Car Season Championship Feature event was lined up straight up by points with Kevin Tomlinson on the pole and Abe Huls on his outside. Huls would use the high side to take the lead as the green flag flew. Tomlinson would fall into the second position and hold it through the first seventeen laps. Aaron Brocksieck came from his third row starting spot to get past Tomlinson for second on lap seventeen. Brocksieck would set sail for Huls but was only able to close to within a tenth of a second as the checkered flag flew on the twentieth lap. Tomlinson crossed the line in third followed by Jeff Mueller in fourth and Terry Houston in fifth but as they say, "it isn’t over till tech", things were about to change. Tomlinson was protested by another driver for not having mufflers on his car which is required by Quincy Raceways and IMCA rules. Upon inspection, Tomlinson was disqualified from his third place finish as he did not have any mufflers in place thus moving him into the last points position for the feature event by IMCA rules. Andrew Griffin and Steve Steinkuhler were the heat race winners.

Tomlinson had a five point lead going into the Season Championship night over Abe Huls but his disqualification from third to the eleventh position provided Huls the needed points to capture his first Triple R Performance Engines IMCA Stock Car Track Points Championship at Quincy Raceways by a five point margin over Tomlinson.

The Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stock Season Championship feature event was lined up in the regular weekly inverted points average manner thus putting Nathan Anders and Steven Watkins Jr on the front row for the start of the twenty lap event. Watkins took the early lead and parlayed it into a twenty lap apparent victory. Adam Scott challenged for almost all the event but settled for the second spot under the flag followed by Mike Wiley in third, Brian Hoener in fourth and Steve Carlin in fifth but it was going to be the tech area determining the outcome of the Season Championship Feature event. Watkins was disqualified from the win after his car was determined to have illegal control arms in the suspension therefore giving the Season Championship win to Adam Scott, his first ever feature event win. Watkins disqualification moved him to the thirteenth place points spot per the IMCA points procedure that governs the points structure in the Hobby Stocks. Scott and Andrew Griffin were the heat race winners.

Steve Carlin entered the nights activities with a narrow two points lead over Jim Powell with Carlin looking for his third career Track Points Championship in the Hobby Stocks. Powell was doing just what he needed to do to catch Carlin in the points battle by keeping ahead of Carlin by several spots but an engine malfunction on the fifth lap brought his efforts to a stop on the front stretch as the engine would quit for the night. Carlin then only needed to stay out of trouble for the rest of the event to take the Track Points Championship and that is exactly what he did as his fourth place finish gave him a 708 to 699 margin over Powell to take the Track Points Championship.

Labor Day Sunday, September 6 will see one of the biggest race nights of the season at Quincy Raceways with the Deery Brother Summer Series for IMCA Late Models rolls into town as well as the second appearance of the O’Reilly’s Midwest All Star Sprints. A strong field of IMCA Late Models is expected as tradition shows between thirty five and forty entries is the norm for this annual Labor Day weekend race. The O’Reilly’s Midwest All-Star 410 Winged Sprints is also expected to feature several of the Midwest’s best drivers with a stout field of entries. The Miller Lite UMP Modifieds are also on tap for a $500 to Win event, the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobbies will be racing for $250 to Win. Another special appearance for the Mod Lites/Dwarf Cars is expected to bring in a good field of entries for a $300 to Win, $75 to Start twenty lap feature event.
