Racer poem from UK

There is a very active vintage stock car racing in England, at dirt/paved oval tracks around the country. In England vintage racing is called BriSCA Heritage Racing. Just like over here, old racers are dragged out of fields, old barns and back yards. Then restored to their former glory days. And when just an old rusty axle from a famous champions car can be found, very original replicas are built around it. A popular driver of these cars passed along a poem to a old friend from Liverpool, George Rimmer. (If you have been to the Chili Bowl, you may have met him!)

The poem is a fun read because it remembers the America roots of stock car racing. Enjoy.

Stock Car Racer

They say we are obsessed with speed,
Adrenaline junkies all the way.
We just crave excitement,
Entertainment on the day.

We share a noble heritage.
With bootleggers (long ago):
After night-time liquor deliveries
Stock car racing they would go!

Today we have progressed apace:
Development is clear to see,
Perfected for the job, at hand,
Evolved through history.

Commitment we have aplenty,
Determined are we too.
When all seems very hopeless,
Succeed is what we do!

People say we are amateurs,
Since money is not king.
We simply love to race
And hear the engines sing.
