Missouri Modified Mania Moved to This Coming Saturday;

2003 Championship/ Fan Appreciation Night as Final 2003 Event , September 13th.

Unrelenting rains caused cancellation of not only Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg's final 'big one', the 7th Annual Missouri Modified Mania, but nearly all the tracks in the midwest this past Saturday and Sunday.

"There is no way we're not going to hold this special event, regardless of when we'd have to do it," CMS owner and director Earl Walls exclaimed. "We'll just move it on to the next week."

Previously scheduled for this Saturday was 'Fan Appreciation Night'. It has now been moved to the final racing event at CMS on September 13th, in conjunction with the '2003 Season Championship'.

And for the tooth and nail closeness in the season's four class championship points runs, they'll now be at minimum, especially in the Mighty Modified division.

Mod ace Alan Deatherage holds a mere 31 point lead over his Concordian neighbor Jason 'trouble' Thompson, while the top Kansan, Bonner Springs' Tom 'rooster' Charles, is just 33 points further back in third. For Charles, the flooding weekend was a boon (pun intended). For many years Tom has planned his yearly vacation toward running the famous 'Boone Super Nationals,' one he has come close to winning many times. Regardless of the dollars it pays, it's been a heritage to Charles; Boone is the same as the Knoxville Nationals is to sprint car racers. He would have been set back in points had the special at CMS been run as scheduled, but now, he loses none. The special events for the modified class at CMS does not pay points, just lots of money.

The 2003 owners of the championship crowns will not be decided until the Championship/ Appreciation event. Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler from Independence, with little more than a year of driving experience, is only 36 points ahead of Pleasant Hill's Steve Hammons in the Missouri Beef Industries Council Street Stocks. Belton's Joe Chevalier has the Odessa, Pool, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprint car points lead but is running tight for the crown with Jimmy Garner from Sedalia. Blue Springs' Kevin 'kid' Coyne has a good edge over rookie racer Daren Rapp from Clinton in the Country Kitchen Limited Late Models. However, the other three classes besides the modifieds have two points nights left.

With a $22,000.00 total purse and $2,000 for the "7th Annual "Missouri Modfied Mania", 40 lap championship feature, the title means just as much to the drivers than the big dollars. If they don't receive the honor as a winner this time, they probably will not be unhappy; 2nd pays $1500.00, third, $1000.00, $900 for fourth, $800 for fifth and stays super-solid all the way down the 24 car pay list.

The weekly top classes of Limited Late Models, WOFC Sprint cars and the wild and wooly Street Stocks will also participate in a complete set of runs.

Top drivers from the Midwest will be seriously competing against CMS' best.

Kansas City's "Fast" Richard Layne, CMS' 6-time CMS Modified champ, won his very first 'big one' in the running of last year's 'Bowl'. And he hasn't stopped winning them since. His third, consecutive big win happened during this year's first 'big one', the Memorial Modified Mayhem. Successfully driving the Bobby Hunt/McEwan Farms modified, he's still one of the top CMS drivers that midwest competitors will be gunning for.

The second 'big one' of the year, the July 4th "Bar-B-Que Bowl", was claimed by CMS regular, Basehor, Kansan Tim Karrick in his Price Chopper/Blue Bunny/SkyRocket mod machine.

Gates will open at 5 pm, hot laps will get underway at 7 and the first qualifying heat race will be green flagged at 7:30.

Although the special race show will once again pay out the heavy dollars, the grandstand admission fee will stay on the low side: Adults-$12, Sr. Citizens-$10, ages 6 though 11-$8 and under 6, free. Pit passes will hold at $20.

It's suggested than fans arrive a bit earlier for the best seats.

CMS is located five miles north of 50 highway and 11 miles south of I-70 on Missouri route 13 (exit at Higginsville).
