COLUMBUS, MS – Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs, GA was untouchable in posting a wire-to-wire win Saturday night in the 40-lap StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series main event at Columbus Speedway in the Hays Racing/Barto Enterprises Warrior, while David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN came from behind to win the series National Championship.

Gentry and Jay Blair of Angie , LA battled back and forth all night long for the title, but it was Gentry overcoming adversity after starting 23rd and finishing seventh in the Dixon Plumbing Mastersbilt to earn his second straight $20,000 StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Championship.

Rainey set fast time among the 42 entrants with a lap around the ¼-mile high-banked clay oval in 14.670 seconds to earn the pole position. Rainey led from the drop of the green flag, and was never challenged in the 40-lap race to pick up his second win of the season.

“We just had an awesome car all night long, and we had a good season,” Rainey said. “We were in the championship hunt right up to the end, and we’re happy to end up with a solid third-place finish in the point standings.”

While Rainey had everything going his way up front, most of the attention in the race centered around Gentry and Blair.

Blair started third in the All-Star Graphics Mastersbilt, and was looking for his third win of the season at Columbus Speedway. Coming into the night, Blair trailed Gentry in the point standings by 34 points. If Blair won the race, Gentry had to finish 16th or better to win the championship.

Gentry had a bad qualifying run and timed in 29th, which put him starting seventh in the first of three 12-lap B-Main races where the top four finishers transferred to the main event. Gentry finished sixth in his B-Main, and had to take the 23rd Provisional starting spot to make the show.

When the race started with Blair third and Gentry 23rd, Blair held a six-point lead over Gentry when the green flag fell. Gentry wasted no time doing what he had to do to win the title. By lap four, Gentry charged up to the 16th spot, and with Blair running second, held a six-point lead over the “Angie Assassin.”

Gentry kept moving forward, and finished seventh, while Blair went under the checkered flag in the fourth spot. Gentry won the title by 28 points.

“We missed the set up for qualifying and the B-Main, so we had to take a provisional to make the race,” Gentry said. “I was really concerned because I know that Blair runs well here. We made some changes trying to get the push out of the car, and it worked. We had a great car for the main event, and I just kept counting the cars as we moved through the field.”

Gentry’s championship charge from 23rd to seventh earned him the NeSmith Chevrolet Hard Charger of the Race Award.

Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA capped off his 2007 Rookie of the Year season with a second-place finish in the CSC Trailer Repair/Brindle Brothers Auto Parts GRT. Brindle, who finished fourth in the StormPay.com DLMS National points, was the Rookie of the Race.

Chris Tays of Corinth, MS had his best run of the season after starting 14th and finishing third in the Bud Coley Trucking Rocket. Tays ended up six the StormPay.com DLMS National points. Following Blair in the fifth spot was Frankie Beard of Hartwell, GA after starting his Freeman Plumbing Mastersbilt in the 17th spot.

Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA came from the 15th starting hole to finish sixth in the Summerville Junkyard Mastersbilt. Fields finished fifth in the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National point standings, his third straight top five finish in the series standings. Following Gentry in the eighth spot was Clint Smith of Senoia, GA in the LSK Enterprises GRT.

Steve Godsey of Bedford, IN came back from an early race spin to finish ninth in the Indiana Stone Works/Summerville Junkyard Rayburn. Godsey had a good day at Columbus Speedway. He also won the 15-lap StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series Race of Regions for the “Elite 18” in the StormPay.com WRS, and was the second quick qualifier for the National Tour event.

Keith Freeman of Commerce, GA, who was the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series Track Champion at Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, GA, rounded out the top ten in the Freeman Plumbing Mastersbilt, and also won the 15-lap StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series Race of Champions against seven other StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series Track Champions.

The three preliminary 12-lap B-Main races were won by Logan Yates of Delta, AL in The Bargain Barn TSR, Smith, and Ronny Hollingsworth of Northport, AL in the Hollingsworth Racing Mastersbilt.

Rainey grabbed the lead at the start of the race followed by Blair, Godsey, Shanon Buckingham of Morristown, TN in the Rusty Wallace Toyota Barry Wright, and Brindle. Buckingham got by Godsey for the third spot on lap two. While running fourth, Godsey spun in turn two on lap four to bring out the first of five caution flags.

Blair saw his slim point lead evaporate, as Gentry moved up from his 23rd starting spot to restart in the 16th position for a six point lead.

After the restart, Buckingham was on the move, passing Blair for second on lap eight, but he suddenly slowed off the pace on lap 11, and stopped on the high side of turn two to light up the caution bulb. Rainey led Blair, Brindle, Yates, and Terry Mosley of Gilbertown, AL in the Butler Auto Parts Rocket down for the restart, while Gentry had moved up to the 13th spot,

Freeman made a big outside move on the restart coming from sixth to pass Mosley and Yates to take over the fourth position. Gentry climbed into the tenth spot by lap 14. Yates, who started 11th, got back around Freeman for fourth on lap 15. Blair gave up two more points to Gentry, as Brindle passed him for the second spot on lap 18.

Jeff Smith of Rocky Face, GA stalled his AllSouth Racing Products Rocket in turn four on lap 19 to bring out the third caution flag of the race. Rainey brought the field down for the restart with Brindle, Blair, Yates, Freeman, Mosley, Tays, Fields, Beard, and Gentry in tow. Beard got by Fields for the eighth spot on lap 20, and Tays took over the fifth spot on lap 22.

Tays was a man on a mission, as he moved up to the fourth position on lap 26 getting around Yates, and was challenging Blair for the third spot by lap 31. Lap 35 saw Yates and Mosley in a battle for the fifth spot, with Mosley passing Yates in turn two, and Yates returning the favor in turn four.

When Yates and Mosley got back to turn two on lap 36, they got together and spun to bring out the fourth caution flag. The restart saw Rainey leading followed by Brindle, Blair, Tays, Beard, Fields, Gentry, Curtis Cline of Douglasville, GA in the Pearson Construction Warrior, Clint Smith, and Freeman.

Josh Huss of Flomaton, AL spun the Charco, Inc. TNT in turn four on lap 37 to light the yellow lamp for the fifth and final time. Rainey pulled away in the final four laps of the race followed by Brindle. Tays went to the outside on the restart, to pass Blair for the third spot, while Gentry rode home in seventh to secure the championship.

The week ahead will be a busy one for the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series as they travel to Tampa, FL for festivities and racing.

The Annual StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series Awards Banquet will be held on Wednesday night in the Cigar City at the Embassy Suites Hotel to honor the top ten drivers in the National point standings, and the top six drivers in the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series West, East and South Regions.

Then on Friday and Saturday night, it’s the 3rd Annual $10,000-to-win 100-lap StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series World Championship Race at East Bay Raceway Park. Over 100 cars are expected for the 2007 season finale for the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series.
