TAMPA, FL……2/14/08…..”I watched all the races before I went out and figured the best way to win this thing was to be smooth and stay on the bottom,” said first time East Bay Open Wheel Modified Winternationals winner, Randle Sweeney.
The UMP Southern Regional Champion chalked up 21 wins in ’07 before finally getting his turn in victory lane here Thursday, collecting $1,500 on opening night of his third time to the East Bay Winternationals.
Competition showed up from 20 states with 93 cars making their way through time trials, eight heats, a D-Main, 2 C-Mains, 2 B-Mains to get to the 24-car A-Main. After a draw among the heat winners, it was Tyler Ivey and Devin Dixon who started in the front row with Sweeney and Roger Crouse in row two, while Mike Wedelstadt and Darrell Nelson made up row three for the 25-lap A-Main.
An early yellow on lap three with Dixon leading, put the field in single file formation and just three laps later, Sweeney was testing that bottom groove in turn four with a nose under the leader. On lap seven, Sweeney explained his pass for the lead saying, “Dixon pushed a little and I was right there to take advantage of it. Usually, they call me a ‘wall knocker’, but not tonight!”
Sweeney, who considers Soggy Bottom in Morgantown KY his home track, brought his brand new Nullynski chassis to compete against the best on this fast 3/8 mile clay surface that saw Dave Cain set a new track record in time trials with a time of 16.724.
Now in its second year with co-owner Harold McElvain, Sweeney’s team kept close tabs on all the races with stop watches, trying fine turn the set-up on their car. The crew, consisting of Craig Skipworth, Ken “Leroy” Brown and Grandson “Tater” selected the right Afco Shocks and went with all “D’s” for tires.
The winner used a Hovis engine and the sponsors on the car include Schoenfeld Headers, PPM Performance Products Manufacturing, UB Machine, Scogin Enterprises and War Paint Graphics.
Once in the lead, there was never time for Sweeney to build a comfortable margin because four more caution flags kept the competition tight. Just prior to the final yellow flag on lap 19, behind Sweeney and Tyler Ivey there was a four-car battle for third spot between Dixon, Jeff Mathews, Cain and Crouse.
However, when Julian Mullis displayed his double checkered flags at the end, it was Sweeney by two car-lengths over the “Florida boys” Ivey, then Dixon, Mathews and Jamie Burrows in the top five. Rounding out the top ten, it was Crouse, Tommy Seets, Jr., Jared Landers, Eric Bruce and Cain.
Heats went to Dixon, Wedelstadt,Tim Hancock, Crouse, Kent Robinson, Sweeney, Darrell Nelson and Ivey. The D-Main advanced four drivers, Tim Barrett, Butch Weisser, William Harrison and Matthew Fetterhoff to the back of the C’s. Then, Austin Sanders, Dale Kelley, Wayne Hammond and Steven Miller moved from the first C-Main to the first B-Main.
From the second C-Main, it was Frank Marshall, Buzzie Reutimann, Shane Sabraski and Vic Vena who advanced to the second B-Main. Joey Jensen, Eric Bruce, Chad Evans and Kenny Johnson made it from their B-Main to the back of the A-Main. The four remaining spots in the A-Main came from the second B-Main and included, Jeff Mathews, Jeff Leka, Ray Buss, Jr. and Charles Patrick.
