Random thoughts 305 sprints....

Well we are nearing the end of the season and what a great year its been. The 305 car count could have been better and the payout could have been better but HEY we saw wheel to wheel sprint racing all season with but 2 yellow flags for crashes, 1 for the 14 car the very first night and 1 for the 7w & 03 car a couple weeks ago.I've witnessed not 1 cross word between the sprint folks and I'm almost positive that everyone of em are playing within the rules. Also we have seen a different winner almost weekly. Folks it just don't get any better than that. I for 1 hope the low car counts haven't discouraged Bobby and I'm thinking we may have a very good car count next season as Bobby told me he knows of 3 to 4 cars that aren't done just yet. Maybe we had a low count as folks where just sitting back to see what happens this season. I do know there is interest in em as a couple of out of funds midget drivers out of Springfield Ill. where checking us out earlier in the season. I can't put a finger on why there aren't more cars but I can tell you this, I've been messing with a bunch of different class race cars for at least 30 years now and the 305's are (so far :D) the best bang for your buck bar none. On a side note we have gained another 305 car as ex midget racer John Tosti purchased a race ready car just yesterday, hopefully we will see him out before season end as he has to pick it up in Penn.(hurry up every chance ya get John ! Josh say's he can't wait to wear your old fat arse out !!!:D) I would like to start rallying for a rule change
and that would be the 16 year old limit. I know all the arguments buttttt what a lot of folks don't take into account are what we old open wheelers call the 1/4 midget kids, just look at the likes of Korey Weyant,Kyle Stephens, Justin Allageir,Jeff Gordan and the list goes on and on, these kids have been racing since they where 5 years old and have more seat time than most of your average 30 year old saturday night drivers and they have been doing it with what is called a "charging rule" where as if they bump a car outa the way intentional or not they are sent to the back. My case in point on this is Peter Palazzolo, he won't be 16 untill July or August 08, kids run 1/4 midgets since he was 5, been running micros the last couple years, and will probally get a midget shot this year or next. The family has a 305 roller at their disposal for the 08 season but if he has to wait till he turns 16 to drive it we will loose that car because if they have to put their funds into the micro to start the 08 season then thats what they'll be stuck with as they can't afford to do both.
Peter has driven Gavin Galbraiths #03 sprinter at BEANFIELD INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY and I can tell ya I'd run wheel to wheel with him anytime. So we do need to consider an exception on the age rule to gain another car for the 08 season,Besides ya let him run a micro @ Doe Run and I'll GarenDarnTee ya a micro will run circles around them sprinters ( But they just don't look and sound as COOOOOOLLLLL) Hey it's time to go home and I've about wore my index finger out. Seeeeeee ya'll Friday night........ Howard

Good luck...

Howard, in this case I agree.... I think for us to "generalize" the rules to accomodate ANYONE, then 16 should be the minimum. In special cases when there is a proven driver who is climbing the ladder, and past success and skill can be looked upon, then we as a group should consider it.

I can account for at least ONE car that WILL be in competition next year for sure. We have a baby due in November(our first) and that killed my race budget before I could get mine completed this year. Not that I'm down about it, the pride of becoming a Daddy comes first:D!!! Next year, I won't have to collect so many parts, and with a few decent sponsors I can get the rest of the things I need to finish it up. I really wanted to have it out this year, it just wasn't possible.

I have really enjoyed the class this year. I think it brought a fresh breath of air to DRR. And for anyone who is skeptical of building/buying a 305, you need not worry... I think I can speak for Bobby too when I say that they WERE a success at our track and it's only gonna get bigger next season!;)

By the way Howard, congrats to you and Josh this year!!

Well you can count me in on that car count for next year (I hope) :DMike is looking for a roller for me so we can start on it this winter. So if you know of anything please let us know...I really hope to get something going soon so we can make it at the start of the season.

If the parents and kid really are ok with him driving the car just do what Daniel Adler did, go get emancipated, Daniel of you are not aware of has been driving 410 sprints since he was 14! and that is how he did it, it is not about what bobby wants or doesnt it is all about insurance/liabilities...

ok..............

, it is not about what bobby wants or doesnt it is all about insurance/liabilities... Right....................................

Only one problem with that. If you emancipate a kid and he gets in a knucklebuster at school or any trouble for that matter then he is considered an adult. And what about your family health plan, mine covers the kid till he turns 19, but if he was emancipated and he got hurt or sick could the carrier say hey tuff luck he's an adult, Darn tootin they can & would....

Insurance policies are regulated on age groups and horsepower that a certain style vehicle may have. I know that Bob's insurance today is better and more expensive than in the past. He finally convinced his insurance into allowing fans to get their pictures taken with feature winners. The best thing to do is talk with Bob Friday nite and hopefully he can get something accomplished with the age deal.I would fell safer with a talented 15 year old on DRR than some old fart like myself in a 305 sprint...........LOL Beat you to it Jon.......

Just kind of curious about how much do you guys have in these cars? Just a ball park figure to be halfway competitive.

Depends on what ya spend on your roller, older sprint cars are plentiful finding them is sometimes a little hard just watch E-bay,midget madness,& hoseheads and such.We bought our car,1997 Trostle complete roller with 2 top wings,2 front wings and a small box of spare parts for $2000 bucks, I don't have an exact dollar figure but I can tell you we have less than 10 grand in our total operation including the open trailer and spares.and boys & girls thats lots less than a UMP modified motor costs. Harris with the # 69 car told me he gave I think $1500 for his roller, pulled a 305 motor out of an old camaro stuck his street stock cam in it and put together an alky carb and went racing and is having more fun than any thing he's done so far,and the Boy is real competitive as he's won a feature this year. Just like any thing else you can spend lots or little, but you don't need a 2006 Maxim to do this deal. We turn our engine an average of 6900 rpm so you can get away with stock cranks and rods. I can't hardly figure out why every saturday night track in the country ain't doin this deal......But then again I'm glad they ain't cuzz it keeps the used E-Bay sprint car parts supply real nice & cheap......My buddy John Tosti just bought a complete race ready 98 Trostle with an injected 305 with fresh bearings and rings,2 top & 2 front wings and a few spare parts off e-bay 2-3 days ago for $4,200,only problem is he's gotta go to Penn. to pick it up but hey......

I've talked to a few of you drivers, and if I can find that "DEAL" out there, then yes I will try to get one together. I need to find a deal like Tom Harris did! LOL Anyway, i'm looking. If anyone knows of any rollers out there, get ahold of me. We'd like to put Stacy in a car next year. - Thanks, Mike.:)

I will be able to put together another low budget roller for a 305 team pretty soon. I can't give it any attention until after 10-13-07 but we can talk about putting one together. It will be a 2000 Gambler 87"/39" with a winters rear end, direct mount front end, KSE steering. Spare parts to be determined. Call Mike at (573)964-0274.

I'd work on it sooner but we are still racing the winged kart steadily until mid-October. I'm glad to hear that you guys are having fun with the 305's. It can be a really fun class. I wish I still had a 305 motor so I could run a few shows with my friends. The 360 is fun and with LOS and XX in close proximity to the house, nothing else makes any sense. However, I miss the low-keyed attitude of most 305 racers. And....before anyone asks, the 360 is much easier to drive. If you can drive a 305, you can drive a 360. You're just going to roast the tires off of the 360 for a couple of nights until your eye-foot coordination adjusts!:)
