TAMPA, FL…..2/15/08……Bringing a brand new RC house car to the East Bay Raceway Park Winternationals is challenging. Just ask defending Open Wheel Modified Winternationals Champion Ray Guss, Jr.
He managed to pull off a win in the final preliminary race Friday night, but not without trials and tribulations on the previous night. “We were concerned about the push we had on Thursday and struggled with minor adjustments all night on our A-1 Shocks, springs and the pole bar. Last year, after we won here in our RC car, we went home and sold it immediately. Now here we are again trying to make a winner out of this one, “the emotional winner explained in victory lane.
The emotion came to a head when Guss received a phone call while photographers were gathered track-side to take pictures of the winner and his crew. The call came from the son of his long-time friend and previous car owner Keith Dennis of KKD Trucking who had just passed away. Guss revealed that when he battled hard in his qualifying heat to get to the feature, he felt he had help and guidance from above and was blessed to be standing in the winner’s circle tonight.
Known as the “Rivercity Hustler”, Guss was determined to stay on the bottom of the track and made it work, by leading every lap from the pole. Four yellow flags for minor incidents kept the competition close, but his new Custom Race Engine built in Knoxville TN performed flawlessly. Robert Crump who owns RC Race Cars in Peoria IL finished the car in time for the crew Joe Nelter, Robert Compton and Bobby Johnson to load up and head for Florida.
The No. 112 sported sponsorship from Depperman Excavating, J. M. Industrial, A. J. May Graphix, Kartville, A. Lucas & Sons and Massey Auto Sales.
With 95 cars on hand, the eight winners did a re-draw and that put Guss and Landers on the front row. Jesse Stovall and Randy Hall made up row two followed by Rich Robinson, Jr. and Mike Harrison.
Two aborted starts occurred before an official lap was recorded, but Guss led from the start and despite efforts by several drivers to make the outside groove work, no one was a threat to Guss. Thursday’s winner, Randle Sweeney did advance from seventh starting spot to run as high as third before brushing the outside wall in turn two on lap nine and dropping to sixth.
At the end, Landers tried in vain to get under Guss, but couldn’t make it work with Guss having a margin of victory of .290 seconds at the wire. Stovall was third ahead of Krushansky and Dave Hess, Jr. Rounding out the top ten it was Mark Noble, Mike Harrison, Hall, Tyler Ivey and Rick Aukland.
The D-Main advanced Butch Weisser, Terry McClintock, Frank Marshall and Terry Haven to the C-Mains. The C-Mains were won by Eric Bruce and Jeff Bland, while the B-Mains were won by Dave Hess, Jr. and Mark Noble.
Drivers earned points on two nights that locked in the top six for Saturday’s 75-lap feature. Those drivers include Jared Landers, Tyler Ivey, Louie Krushandky, Ray Guss, Jr. Randle Sweeney and Robert Crouse.
