Could it be any closer for the Touring Championships? Both Mid East and Southern Region Championships are completely up for grabs as the FASTRAK Dirt Late Model Series rolls into the high banks of Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap TN this weekend.

A more than average car count is expected, as many teams see this as a ‘paid practice’ for the upcoming $50,000 to win Grand Nationals. As track owner Joe Loven has been working on the track creating a much more ‘tacky’ surface, look for the current track record of 13:64 set by local Allen Champ earlier this year to be shattered. The competition is sure to be fierce as competitors from all over the South East are planning to be there.

“The Gap” as it is called, has a certain flavor, as it is often said the locals there are some of the fastest in the country. With both FASTRAK Regional Championships in close contention, all of the Touring teams are certain to be in attendance as well. The Southern Region is only separated by as little as 6 points. The Regional Championships will be decided this weekend period!

Three weeks ago, John “The Wild Cat” Llewellyn (90) of Knoxville TN , led the points with William “Mr. Smooth” (22) of Phenix City Al close behind, and David “Bad Boy” McCoy (187) of Franklin NC holding the trump card with a “throw away” resulting from his win at the FASTRAK Winter Nationals earlier this year. “Lightning” Lee Cooper (57) of Greer SC held the forth place position resulting in having had a very tough first part of the 2007 season.

Then came the $10,000 to win race at Wythe raceway. Llewellyn had a bad night, McCoy made up some ground with Cooper bringing home a 2nd place finish. Points were turned upside down as the “trump card” of McCoy was beginning to lose it’s luster. Thomas broke going for the lead late in the race, and now the points were turned upside down again. Both Thomas and Llewellyn suffer while McCoy and Cooper make up a little ground.

Then comes Antioch Speedway. Cooper 307 points, Llewellyn 307, Thomas 306 and McCoy 290 with a possible 315. Cooper comes home 2nd, Llewellyn 4th, McCoy 7th. Thomas not there. Cooper takes the point lead.

Carolina Speedway. Mid East Points : Cooper 360, Llewellyn 358, McCoy possible 329 and Thomas 272. Southern Region Cooper 341, Llewellyn 338, McCoy possible 344. Does McCoy lead or not after this event. Copper broke a tie rod, McCoy caught up in a wreck early on in the race, Llewellyn with a good run bringing home 9th. Cooper finishes 18th and McCoy 19th. Man this is getting tighter. Thomas out of it with a no show.

Going into the Gap. Llewellyn takes the lead back again! Cooper 2nd and McCoy 3rd in the Mid East Region. Southern Region Llewellyn takes the lead again with 365, Cooper 359 and McCoy a possible 361. Top three separated by only 6 points!

Both the Mid East and Southern Region Championships WILL BE DECIDED this weekend at the Gap. Each Championship pays $5000 to win and pays through 10 positions. McCoys “ace in the hole” is no more, as everything is now on the line. IT WILL BE DECIDED SATURDAY SEPT 29TH. There are lots of combinations that could happen. WHO WILL LEAVE THE CHAMPION OF THE MID EAST REGION? WHO WILL LEAD THE CHAMPION OF THE SOUTHERN REGION? In only four days, we will know.
