ROSSBURG, OH (4-7-06) – What started off as a warm and sunny day in western Ohio turned into a cold, windy, rainy night with temperatures dropping into the low 40’s and wind gusts blowing at 30 mph. Funnel clouds were reportedly seen in the Rossburg area. Eldora Speedway, however, escaped the worst of the weather that was dumping buckets of rain to the north and to the south.

During the hotlap sessions the temperature was still mild, but the threat of rain was looming and dark clouds could be seen all around the speedway. With just two cars left to go in qualifying, those skies finally opened up and the rain came down. Thankfully it was only a small amount and a half hour later we were ready to roll again.

With the track conditions now changed, fairness had to come into play and the entire field had to be re-qualified. By the time another hot lap session was run for the 46 cars in the pits, the temperature was dropping…fast. The wind was beginning to shift from the North and there was still plenty of moisture in the air. This would take its toll on many motors. The field would take just one lap this time to determine their heat starting positions, and for some this would be the end of their evening.

Rookie contender James Mosher lost a piston during his qualifying run and was forced to scratch for the evening. Rookie contender Brandon Martin also head engine trouble after his qualifying run, and though the crew was working feverishly to get it corrected he was not able to make the call to line up for his heat. Brandon was also done for the evening. Paul May changed a motor and was not able to make it out for his qualifying run, which put him on the tail of his heat. He then had some mechanical problems that forced him to drop out early. Brock Mayes, who was running up front throughout that same heat race, lost a motor with just 3 laps to go. He was solidly in a transfer spot but the motor gremlins got him as well.

The competition within the 46 car field made it challenging for everyone with the top names in sprint car racing rolling into the infamous half mile, high-banked speed plant. However, it wasn’t necessarily the competition who got the best of the All Stars…it was the changing weather and Eldora Speedway itself. With the World of Outlaws, the newly formed National Sprint Tour, and some independent racers from all around the area on hand to do battle, it was the All Stars who took the biggest hit on motors.

Greg Wilson and Butch Schroeder were able to transfer from their heats and also had qualifying times that allowed them to run the Dash. However, it was Butch who was now unable to make the call and was scored last in his Dash. The problems were fixed in time to start the A-main where he came home 12th. Greg Wilson had a good run battling side by side for several laps with former All Star champion Chad Kemenah. Greg finished 14th in the 25 lap A-main event.

Sammy Swindell, who is not officially affiliated with any series, won the event in grand fashion. The veteran star finished the race with no brakes and a stuck throttle. “I had both feet on the floor because there weren’t any brakes and the throttle wouldn’t go down or come up. It wasn’t wide open, but it was close. The problem was that you needed to work the throttle a little bit when you hit the ruts and I couldn’t do that. I knew it was getting close to the end because they gave me the five-to-go. I hoped I had a bit of a lead because I tried to ride it out. I was a sitting duck. I couldn’t go faster and I couldn’t go slower. I was just fortunate that I got into some open track where I could just run laps by myself. It was good enough. I saw somebody right there at the end, but once I got past the checkered flag I just turned the switch off. That was the only way I could stop,” said Swindell.

Through the efforts of the Eldora track crew facing adverse weather conditions, the All Stars will be back at Eldora for the second night of co-sanctioned competition with the World of Outlaws on Saturday, April 8th. The temperature will be cold, but the sun will be shining and the All Star teams will make the needed adjustments and take another crack at the half mile dirt monster we call Eldora Speedway.
