Story by Dan Stewart
The first leg of the Tri-State Challenge was won by Shannon Babb, besting drivers from seven states. Kevin Weaver set fast time of the 48 drivers on hand at 12.938. The dash was run UMP Summernational style, with a fabulous race being won by Roger Long over Don O'Neal, Mike Mullvain and Terry English. Kevin Weaver, Billy Moyer, Joe Ross, Jr and Bob Pierce all won heat races with semi features won by Billy Drake and Brian Shirley. Roger Long and Don O'Neal started front row, with O'Neal taking the initial lead, and opening up quite a distance between himself and second place Long. Around lap 10, Babb nosed his way into making it a three wide race for the lead. Babb then took the lead for himself on lap 14. The latter stages of the 40 lap, $10,000 to win feature saw tenth place starter Bob Pierce come on strong and make a bid for the lead. Babb would not be denied this win, and Pierce settled for second place.
