LOCUST GROVE AR. Shannon Babb picked up the $42,000 top prize in the 11th Annual Comp Cams Topless 100. Babb took the lead from Dan Schlieper on a lap 54 restart, and went the rest of the way in taking the win. Scott Bloomquist lead the first 42 laps, but got turned around on a restart. Dan Schlieper was the race leader from that point until Babb took over on lap 54. There were seven cautions in the race, and twelve cars finished on the lead lap.
Scott Bloomquist held the pole, with Bill Frye to his outside. Frye fell back as the green appeared, but the race had just gotten off to a good start when Peyton Taylor brought out the caution on lap two, stalled in turn four.
Schlieper, Babb, Dale McDowell, and Ray Cook followed Bloomquist on the restart. Cook shot past McDowell as the field took the green flag, then Frye was past McDowell to take fifth.
Bloomquist was ten carlenghts ahead of Schlieper by lap seven. Frye got under Cook for fourth in turn four on lap 12. Out front Bloomquist was already starting to lap back markers by lap 13. Bloomquist was in heavy traffic by lap 16, which allowed Schlieper to start to close back in by lap 20. Bloomquist's lead was down to five carlenghts by lap 25.
Bloomquist had cleared one batch of slower cars, but was back in heavy traffic again by lap 32. Schlieper was knocking on Bloomquists back door on lap 36, and Babb had also closed up on Schlieper, making for a tight three way battle for the lead by lap 38.
Terry Phillips brought out the caution on lap 42, as he was hard into the wall in turn two. Some contact on the restart between Bloomquist and Schlieper sent Bloomquist spinning in turn four, not allowing the race to restart. The contact occured as some bumping started further back in the field, and Schlieper was bumped into Bloomquist from behind.
Schlieper would pace the field on the restart. Frye got past Babb on the restart, while Shane Clanton worked up to fourth and Ray Cook fifth. Schlieper was fifthteen carlengths over Frye by lap 50. Schlieper was coming up on traffic, but Billy Moyer brought out the caution on lap 54 as he was stalled in turn four.
Babb was on the outside of Frye on the restart, and vaulted past Frye and Schlieper into the lead as the green flag waved. Wendell Wallace shot into fourth, but the caution flag waved one lap into the restart as Gary Stolba and Shane Harris tangled on the frontstretch.
Steve Francis was on the move on the next restart, into fifth, then past Wallace to fourth in turn four. The yellow waved again on lap 60 for Brian Birkhofer who was pulled up in turn four.
Francis had something go sour on the restart, and Wallace and Bloomquist were by. Wallace drove past Schlieper into third in turn four on lap 61. Francis brought out another caution on lap 62 as he stopped on the backstretch.
Wallace improved another spot on the restart, to second past Frye. Babb had edged out ahead of Wallace by lap 66. Bloomquist worked past Schlieper to fourth in turn two on lap 67.
Babb was pulling away from the field, and had a half straightaway advantage by lap 70. Babb was looking at traffic when the yellow flag waved on lap 71 for Dewaine Hottinger, who had a broken rear suspension.
Babb had roared back out to a 15 carlenght advantage by lap 75, and was a half straightaway ahead, working traffic by lap 80. Babb was working some very heavy traffic by lap 88, and Wallace had been able to work back to within ten carlenghts. Babb had cleared his obsticles by lap 95, when Gary Stolba brought out the yellow on lap 97 as he was spun in turn four.
Shannon Babb lead the final three laps, and came home with the win. Wendell Wallace, Bill Frye, Scott Bloomquist, and Matt Miller made up the top five. Dan Schlieper, Ray Cook, Billy Moyer, Freddy Smith, and Steve Francis rounded out the top ten.
Brandon Smith claimed Friday's modified feature. Larry Shaw Race Cars and Performance Autoplex added money, so Smith took home $800. Kevin Salter, Jason Wilkey, Richie Tosh, and Wayne Brooks rounded out the top five.
Peyton Taylor notched Saturday's modified feature win. Larry Shaw, Performance Autoplex, and Mark Greer added money, making the feature win worth $1,300 to Taylor. Wayne Brooks, Randy Zimmerman, Jason Wilkey, and Jared Landers rounded out the top five.
