Godfrey, IL (June 21, 2004) Bad luck turned to good luck for Shannon Babb as he won the opening night event for the U.M.P. Summer Nationals. Babb's night got off to a rough start when the motor expired in his car during the hotlap session. Babb rolled out his backup car for qualifying and turned the sixth fastest time. His luck turned around on redraw for starting positions in the dash as he drew the pole position for the dash. Babb settled for a second place finish in the dash Terry English took the win.
Babb started on the outside of the front row on the start of the feature and took the lead going into turn one. Babb led all forty laps but had to hold off the challenge of Don O'Neal and Rodney Melvin over the last fifteen laps. O'Neal was able to get his nose to the rear quarter panel of Babb a few times, but could never pull along side Babb. O'Neal also had his hands full with Melvin, as Melvin pulled along side O'Neal several times for the second spot. Terry English slid back to fourth early on in the event, but reeled in the leaders near the end of the event but settled for fourth. Matt Taylor had a solid outing all night long and came home in the fifth position.
Mike Harrison
The current U.M.P. Modified National point leader Mike Harrison stormed to the front from the fifth starting position to win the modified feature. Tim Hancock pulled along side to challenge Harrison late in the race, but Harrison drove on to victory. Steve Myers finished third, Matt Goulden fourth and Bobby Bittle rounded out the top five.
