--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has been a great season but our officers have informed me they will not let the oval series continue for the 2004 season they think that it was not worth the time or effort. I don't agree with them but, all that I can say I will miss all of the great people that came out this season and supported the oval. Thanks to the people that helped make the season fun for me. I'm truely sorry for not being able to produce better results. I don't think our new officers really care about the little people either, even though they smile and so. This really makes me feel like I've been slapped in the face. After a month of talking about what I needed to come up with

THEIR PLAN

* WHEN WOULD I USE THE TRACK?............THURSDAY NIGHTS
* COULD I GET RAY'S PERMISSION?................I DID GET IT
* COULD I GET LIGHTS OR LIGHT TOWER?.......WAS IN THE PROCESS OF PERMANENT LIGHT SYSTEM DONATED
* WHAT WOULD BE MY PLAN IF I COULD NOT GET LIGHTS?..........RUN ON A OPEN SUNDAY
* & LASTLY WHAT WAS MY INCOME FOR THE OVAL AND COULD I MAKE MY BUDGET GOALS FOR 2004?..............INCOME FOR 2003 THE CLUB MADE ABOUT $500.00 ON 5 EVENTS WITH AN AVERAGE OF 17 CARS AT EACH. FOR THE 2004 SEASON I WAS HOPING SEE THE CAR COUNT AND DOLLAR BOTH GO UP BY RACING ON THURSDAY NIGHTS DUE TO NOT COMPETING WITH ANY OTHER TRACK AT ALL.

I GUESS WHAT THE OFFICERS ARE TELLING US IS THAT WE AS A CLUB ELECT THEM TO MAKE ALL OUR DECISIONS FOR US ON ALL MATTERS NO MATTERWHAT THEY SAY TO OUR FACE.....

THE WORST PART IS I WAS TOLD BY KEVIN KELLY ON SAT. JAN. 31, 2004 THAT THE BOARD WAS GOING TO TAKE A POLL ON THIS WEB SITE TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY INTREST IN THE OVAL. I FOR ONE NEVER GOT TO SEE THAT POLL NOR ANY POST FOR THAT MATTER.

I THOUGHT IT WAS ESPECIALLY NICE OF THE OFFICERS TO TELL BY PHONE THAT IT WAS NOT NECESSARY TO BE AT THE MEETING TO NIGHT BECAUSE I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET THE LIGHTING DEAL DONE BEFORE TONIGHT AND STILL NEEDED SOME TIME TO GET IT FINALLIZED, THEN THEY ALL DECIDED TO VOTE IT DOWN WITHOUT GIVEN ANY THOUGHT TO HOW CRASHED I WOULD BE. I NOW SEE HOW MANY FRIENDS I REALLY HAVE IN THIS CLUB.......

JUST REMEBER ONE LAST THING FOR ALL THAT WAS NOT AT THE MEETING AT I-55 IN APRIL OF 2001 WITH RAY MARLER, LET'S SEE THERE WAS DENNIS HARRIS, TONY BOSWORTH, TODD MARTIN, SKIP WIESE, DENNIS RIGGS, & MY SELF THATS RIGHT IF IT WAS NOT FOR ME OUR TRACK AS MOST OF YOU KNOW IT WOULD NOT BE IN EXCISTENCE TODAY FOR IT WAS I AND I ALONE THAT SET UP THE VERY FIRST MEETING WITH RAY MARLER. AND NOT ONCE WAS THERE EVEN A THANKS NOW THIS IS JUSTANOTHER SLAP IN THE FACE.

NOW I JUST HAVE ONE QUESTION DO THEY REALLY THINK I WAS JUST GOING TO GO AWAY AND TAKE THIS LYING DOWN NO, I HAD TO GET MY FEELINGS OUT IN THE OPEN NOW THAT MY LIFE HAS BEEN CRUSHED TONIGHT AND ALL THAT I HAVE PUT IN TO THIS. IT IS 1:00 AM EVEN THOUGH I NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO SLEEP I WILL GO TO BED. I JUST HOPE THAT ALL THE OFFICERS CAN GET A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP AND THIS LITTLE THING DON'T WEIGH TO HEAVY ON THEM. I believe the lord has better things in store for me and he will reep what is sown

good night all

THANKS FOR TIME

This is a copy of the letter that I posted on the SLKA web site. I just thought that the fine class of people that ran the oval should know the truth to why we will not be able to continue the oval series. Sorry if I embarrest any one but, I thought the oval came a long way in one year.

Thanks again
Tim

The Story of St. Louis Karting

The Association was formed in the 60's as St Louis Go Kart Club. I raced on a variety of dirt tracks including the St. Charles Raceway, and ran until 1975.
The club laid dormant until 1981, when the club was given a piece of property from St. Louis County on Telegraph in 1988. It had a old track at the site which was very neglected and had to be renovated. The club took on the project and created a .4 mile road course.
From the mid 80's to 1993 the club gained as many as 250 members when the great flood of 1993 hit we lost about 150 members. We had a long battle with the river . Every spring the river would cause us to loose half of the season to flooding.

In 1998 the club contacted St. Louis Co. Parks Dept. about the use of another park at Antire road and I-44. We felt that this would be a great location since it was already zoned for motorsports by the county. After one and a half years and a number of meetings the county told us "no" that it would damage the I-44 Greenway coridoor.

So I started looking elsewhere in April, a drive to I-55 Raceway to show my 7 year old son where I used to race my latemodel sportsman (AARA)from 1987-1991. It was on that Saturday morning that a quick look with my son brought back alot of great memories for me that I was able to share with him.

Then the unexpected happened. A man appeared from one of the buildings and asked if he could help me. I don't know why but the light went on and I responded to his question with this "Do you think that Ray Marler would be interested in a Go Kart Race Track ?". Which led to a phone number exchange. On Tuesday I called Ray Marler and his reply was "He's getting ready for the world of Outlaws"show next week to call him back after that and we would talk more.I agreed and made a second on the following Tuesday to set up a appointment with him and come of our board members.

That meeting consisted of Dennis Harris-Pres.,Tony Bosworth-Vice Pres., Todd Martin-Race Dir., Dennis Riggs-Track Manger, Skip Wiese, Ray Marler-of I-55, and myself. After about an hour of descussion of the pros and cons, Ray seggested that we go down to the drag strip and look around and see what would work out . He stated that his biggest concern was what to do if part of the ground was to flood once in a great while. We expressed that at Widman Raceway we would loose half the season to the flooding. Some final questions were asked and answered. Ray looked at the five of and replied he would be happy to help us work out the rest of the details .

After about 2 1/2 months we were granted the approval to proceed with the track layout. I will never forget that day. It was a Saturday, we were at Widman having a regular practice day, an I was watching my son out on the track when Tony walked up from behind and told me that he had just recieved a phone call for Ray and that he had said "YES". By the time I stopped celebrating which seemed like forever. I think a hour had passed.

The work had began the very next weekend, we had to start by moving an 1/8 mile of chain link fence then painting it with silver alum. paint. Boy did the kids look like tinmen that day.

Then the problems with the old drag strip were discovered there was no base rock under the asphalt, yep you guessed it, it all had to be tore out. first we had to dig up the 24"drain pipe that ran under the track. next came digging up all the elastic soil and put in large shot rock, in some places it was several feet thick. Finally Bloomsdale Exc. could put down the base rock which was 18" deep, then they placed 6" of minus on top and the final compacting began the track was ready for paving late Fall of 2001 but, the weather was against us again RAIN and more RAIN made the ground to soft to pave. then it turned cold.

The Spring of 2002 we saw the weather was against us again we saw the ground work we had done go under 5 feet of flood water. Thank the good lord this one only lasted 3 weeks instead of 3 months, with the water down the track prep was very minimu
