Drivers in the Southern Raceway Crate Late Model Division will now be competing for both a track point fund and a Regional point fund on Saturday nights for the remainder of the 2007 season.

Southern Raceway joins Friday night tracks Blackman Motor Speedway in Blackman, FL, Baton Rouge Raceway in Baton Rouge, LA, and Saturday night tracks Pike County Speedway in McComb, MS, A1 Raceway in Slidell, LA, Deep South Speedway in Loxley, AL, and Butler County Motorsports Park in Greenville, AL in the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series South Region.

“We’re very excited about being a part of the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series, and it is a positive thing for our track, our competitors and our fans,” Southern Raceway Owner Mike Arnold said. “Being a part of this series is going to help our car count, as our Crate Late Model drivers can compete not only for a track point fund, but also a regional point fund.”

Arnold said with the growing popularity of the Crate Late Model Division at Southern Raceway, he is paying the class $850-to-win on Saturday nights.

Milton, FL has become a hotbed of popularity for the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series, as the top three drivers, and four of the top ten drivers in the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series South Region hail from this Florida Panhandle community.

StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series South Region point leader Frank Wilson, second-place Bobby Morrison, third-place Scott Sessions, and seventh-place Taylor Jarvis all reside in Milton, FL. They have become known as the “Milton Mafia” in the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series South Region.

“Southern Raceway joining the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series South Region is a good thing for my racing program,” Wilson said. “I really like this series, and now I can race for this championship in my hometown. Before Southern Raceway signed on, I would have to drive right by the track every Saturday, as a lot of other drivers had to do to compete for StormPay.com regional points.”

Other top StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series South Region drivers from Milton, FL are Joshua Joiner, Jonathan Joiner, and Jesse Barnhill.

“We’re excited to have Southern Raceway as a part of the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series, as they have recognized the popularity and excitement this form of dirt late model racing is bringing to the Gulf Coast,” StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series president of Operations and Communications Roby Helm said. “We’re currently in negotiations with Mike Arnold to bring a StormPay.com National Touring event to Southern Raceway this fall.”

The South Region of the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series is the newest region for the dirt late model sanctioning body, as it was introduced this year, the second year for the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series.

“The South Region is the fastest growing region for the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series, as it now boasts the highest number of tracks in any of our regions,” Helm said. “Six of the seven tracks are new to the series for 2007. Last year, the Mississippi area grew quickly, and this year, along with the South Region, we are also seeing a lot of growth in Georgia and Indiana.”

The Crate Engine concept, that is the foundation of the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series, is based on dirt late model race cars powered by an economical GM Performance Crate Engine that is built and sealed at the factory to prevent any expensive modifications. The engines are shipped to GM dealers nation-wide, and are readily available to competitors.

There are two GM Performance Crate Engines to choose from. There is a 400-horsepower aluminum-head 604 engine that costs right at $5,000, and a 350-horsepower steel-head 602 engine that costs right at $3,000. The 602 engine receives a 150-pound weight break.

The StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series features a National Touring Division that competes in up to 24 events nation-wide that pay anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000-to-win. For weekly competitors, there is the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series that now has 20 tracks divided up into three Regions.
