JACKSON, MS – Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN and Brooks Strength of Jackson, MS earned the front row starting spots on Friday night during preliminary action for Saturday night’s $5,000-to-win 75-lap StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series race at Swinging Bridge Raceway.
Buckingham, the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National point leader coming into the race, is working on a “Clean Sweep” of the event.
During qualifications, Buckingham turned in the fast time among the 37 entrants. Buckingham toured the 3/8-mile clay oval in 15.152 seconds for an average speed of 89.097 miles per hour in the S&S Millwright Barry Wright/604. Buckingham then won the first ten-lap heat race, and ended the evening with a win in the six-lap StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash to earn the pole position for Saturday night’s main event.
Strength was impressive in his dirt late model debut after graduating from the open-wheel modified ranks. The 19-year-old driver was the second quick qualifier, won the second ten-lap heat race, and finished second in the StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash to earn the outside front row starting spot for the big show on Saturday night driving the Dutier Motorsports Rocket/604.
Carnell Parker III of Clarksville, TN and Landon Frith of Terry, MS finished third and fourth respectively in the StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash to make up the second row for the Saturday night feature race. Parker won the fourth ten-lap heat race in the Parker Racing Mastersbilt/604, and Frith won the third ten-lap heat race in the Swinging Bridge Raceway Mastersbilt/602.
The top four finishers in each ten-lap heat race on Friday night transferred into the main event on Saturday night. Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS finished second in the first heat followed by Jeff Smith of Villanow, GA, and Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA.
Following Strength across the stripe in the second heat were Neil Lee of Flowood, MS, Ryan Gifford of Winchester, TN, and Kevin Watts of Denham Springs, LA. Second through fourth in the third heat were David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN, Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA, and Doug Todd of Brandon, MS.
Finishing behind Parker in the fourth heat were Jarrette Gunn of Brandon, MS, Davin Bates of Independence, LA, and Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS. Drivers that finished fifth on back in the four heat races will have one final opportunity to transfer to the feature in one of two 12-lap B-Main races on Saturday night.
Among the drivers not yet qualified for the feature race are four drivers in the top ten of the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National point standings.
Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN, who is third in the points, is in a B-Main, along with sixth-place and top Rookie of the Year candidate Frankie Beard of Hartwell, GA, eighth-place Zach Nichols of Cedartown, GA, and tenth-place Jeff Purvis of Clarksville, TN.
The 23rd and 24th starting spots in the feature race will be provisional starting spots reserved for the top two drivers in the top 15 of the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series that fail to qualify for the main event through heat race, or B-Main competition.
