MUSKOGEE OK. Terry Phillips picked up feature win number nine on the 2003 O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series. It was also the first night on the 25th Annual Summertime Classic. Phillips was unable to make up any ground on Bill Frye however, as Frye finished second behind Phillips, and was the top qualifier, so they gained the same amount of championship points.
Frye and Phillips shared the front row for the start of the 40 Lap main event. Phillips was off with the green flag. Behind him, Frye and Jerry Buck dueled side by side for second, with Buck getting the spot in turn four. Leslie Essary and Jeff Taylor fell in behind the top three.
Phillips was pacing the field by 10 carlengths, when the caution flag waved on lap six for Mike Brown who was pulled up on the backstretch with a flat tire. Taylor was fourth on the restart, with Wendell Wallace moving to the fifth position on lap eight.
Phillips was out front by 15 carlenghts by lap 10, and was a half straightaway ahead by lap 15. Jeff Taylor brought out caution number two, as he was stopped with a flat tire on lap 18. Leslie Essary pitted for rubber during the caution as well.
Wallace shot into second place on the restart. Phillips was pacing the field by 10 carlengths by lap 20. Buck, then Frye was back by Wallace by lap 22, while Phillips had regained his half straightaway margin by lap 24.
Wallace was starting to fade, as Mike Bowers was by him by lap 25. The caution flag re-appeared on lap 26 for Jerry Buck who had suffered the flat tire fate as well. Wallace continued to fade on the restart, and took his car to the infield by lap 28.
Phillips was leading Frye by 10 carlenghts by lap 31. That lead was wiped out again with a caution, this time on lap 33 as Gary Stolba and Justin Fulton had tangled in turn three.
Mike Bowers was by Dewaine Hottinger for the third spot on the restart. Frye made some runs on Phillips as the laps wore down, but was unable to overcome Phillips. Terry Phillips came home with the win, with Bill Frye, Mike Bowers, Dewaine Hottinger, and Raymond Merrill making up the top five. Mike Brown, Jeff Taylor, Jack Sullivan, Leslie Essary, and Charlie Randolph rounded out the top top ten.
