Forty years ago today I would have been 15 years old and would have spent most of the day at Holiday Valley swimming pool (was on Marshal Rd. Valley Park) then out to Lake Hill for the races. Then would have thumbed a ride back to Kirkwood after words.

I was a kid following edited TV racing on Wide World of Sports and the late night Car & Track show. Just one summer away from my first live race at St. Charles Speedway! Thanks for the photo Fireball!

hmmm, forty years ago. spent a bit of time at charley bowl and lake hill with my folks. i was still a kid back then,13 in 69. seems like we went to tri city a bit as well, had a freind who ran hobby cars, might have been a few years later. they ran sprints back then and pitted on the inside.

Stationed in Minot, N. Dakota with USAF, racing Semi Late Models ('54 Chevy 2 door Hardtop w/283) and waiting for my discharge the following spring.

Received an all expenses paid Gov't funded, most memorable trip.

In Augest of 69 I was trying to stay alive in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
I was a Crew Chief on the uh1-h and -c with the 119th Assault Helicopter Co.
Didn't see any racing except me running to the bunkers:rolleyes:

40 years ago I was 15 and hanging out with my buddies at Tobey's hamburger joint on Watson and Old Sappington right across the street from Crestwood Plaza.

Aaahhh……those were the days…..1969 and 7 years old……playin’ in the yard with Barbie dolls, Hot Wheels, hula hoops, wiffle balls & bats, Chinese jump ropes and Skip-it! When we got tired of playing with “things” we took on a game of Simon Says, Freeze Tag, Dodge Ball, Swinging Statues or Red Rover. Then, when the streetlights came on and it got too dark for that, we turned to flashlight tag, hide & seek and catching lightning bugs of which we sometimes crafted neon jewelry out of…..childhood memories……..

And yes, my mother faithfully wore her POW/MIA bracelet - which she still has. I was too young to completely understand the true meaning of war. After my husband’s 20 year Marine Corps career (we’ve been married for 30) I can honestly say I fully understand it now. Sometimes it makes me really long for those carefree years of youthful innocence again.

And yes, we enjoyed time at the race track back then, too. But not as much as we do now!!!
