INDY RACING LEAGUE INDYCAR SERIES -- Fountain, Colo.
(The IRL IndyCar Series returns to Gateway Aug. 9-10 for the Emerson Indy 250)
Another sizzling finish at Texas out of the way, and it’s into the mountains for the IRL crowd, as they
compete in the Honda Indy 225 Sunday at Pike’s Peak International Raceway. Al Unser Jr., lost the June
Texas race last year by .011 second to Jeff Ward. This time around, the veteran won a last-lap duel with
points leader Tony Kanaan by a “cushy” 0.81 second to score his first victory since the Inaugural Gateway
IRL race in Aug. 2001. The win also vaulted Unser into the points chase. He’s in second spot, just 26
points behind Kanaan, as the IRL IndyCars head for their sixth race in the campaign. Tora Takagi of Japan
had his best finish, a third, at Texas. Indy 500 champion Gil de Ferran, coming off an eighth-place effort at
Texas, is the defending champion at the 1-mile Pike’s Peak oval.
IRL POINTS LEADERS: 1. Tony Kanaan (1 win) 177; 2. Al Unser Jr. (1) 151; 3. Helio Castroneves 149;

NASCAR BUSCH SERIES – Sparta, Ky.
(Scott Riggs won the Charter Pipeline 250 at Gateway on May 10)
The run of stand-alone races continues Saturday night with the Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway, and that
suits Scott Riggs just fine. After breaking a victory drought at Gateway last month, Riggs took his second
stand-alone win of the season Saturday night at Gateway’s sister track, Nashville Superspeedway. That
propelled him into the points lead for the first time in his Busch Series career going into this weekend’s
race at the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway oval. It was the third win in as many years at Nashville for Riggs,
in both the Craftsman Truck and Busch Series. He edged David Green and rookie David Stremme to the
checkers. A year ago, Riggs won the pole and finished fourth at Kentucky before starting a second-half
slump that he finally shook early this year. Todd Bodine won the race last year, and will run between the
Cup race at Michigan and Kentucky seeking to repeat.
BUSCH POINTS LEADERS: 1. Scott Riggs (2) 2056; 2. David Green (1) 2038; 3. Todd Bodine (1)
2032; 4. Ron Hornaday (1) 1912; 5. Brian Vickers 1881

TV BROADCAST: Saturday FX 7 p.m. (CDT)
