There were as many cars in the pits on Saturday night at Warrensburg, Missouri’s Central Missouri Speedway as the temperature reading was on the track’s thermometer. With 101 drivers checked in to race, the loyal CMS race fans in the grandstands witnessed 21 races during the night’s race-card program. Along with the Mighty Modifieds, Limited Late Models, 305 Sprints and Street Stocks, the Show-Me Vintage Racers were also on hand in their classic coupes and sedans.

The dedicated track prep crew had their work cut out for them this past week with the excessive heat and dry conditions but the track held up nicely throughout the evening. As usual the Street Stocks began the night with their qualifying heat races as Oak Grove’s Cole Wimmer, Warrensburg’s Marc Carter and Clinton’s Nathan Himes were all victorious in the 6-lap events. All Street Stocks that checked in made the 15-lap main event with Wimmer and Carter bringing the field to green-flag racing. From the get go Carter powered his way around the track and at one point had a full straightaway advantage on Wimmer. By lap 10, Warrensburg’s Wayne Harper began making his way to the front from his seventh starting position and was challenging Wimmer for second. Several attempts at a late-race restart saw Harper right behind Carter challenging for the lead; however, in the end it was once again Carter taking the race win, his seventh of the year over Harper in second. Cole Wimmer had his best run of the year to come home in third. The rest of the top six at the line were Warrensburg’s Chad Eickleberry, Himes and Lone Jack’s Bryant Moyer.

With the recent purse increase of 500 dollars-to-win, the Limited Late Model car count was once again strong as there were three heat races to sort out the A-main event lineup. The “Mountain Man” Mark Evinger of Oak Grove grabbed the win in heat one as Warsaw’s Donnie Gemes and Blue Springs’ Kevin “The Kid” Coyne nailed down wins in heats two and three respectively. When the 18-car field took the green flag for the A-main it was the Mountain Man and Donnie Gemes who took Hershel Thompson’s green flag down into turn one. The race ran smoothly until a lap 5 wreck in turn two brought out the first of many caution flags during the race. Around this time the 58 machine of Winston’s Jason Estes was letting Gemes know he was not alone. After a few more laps of caution, which saw several cars fall by the wayside including Evinger, KCK’s Danny Barker, Blue Springs’ Jimmy Morris and Hamilton’s Mike McCoy; it was Gemes and Estes, who now had company in the name of Coyne as the top three. Near the end of the race the determination was made to complete the race with a green, white, checkered finish as the time clock limitation had elapsed. As they came across the line it was Donnie Gemes, Estes and David Gemes as the top three. A last lap spin by The Kid Coyne relegated him from third to an 8th-place finish. Upon completion of the event it was discovered that Donnie Gemes did not pass the tech inspection on his car and he was disqualified from the race. This allowed Jason Estes to take the checkered flag for his first A-main win of the year. Warsaw’s David Gemes came home second from his 9th starting spot. He was followed by Ashland’s Virgil Jeffery who recovered from an earlier setback, in third place. Steven Clancy, Sean Williams and Kevin Gilpin rounded out the top six.

Giving the race fans a blast from the past, the Show-Me Vintage Racers were in attendance with a field of 15 cars. There were Ford and Chevy Coupes and Sedans, a Pontiac, a Kaiser and even a Studebaker and Super Modified in the field. Two heat races were ran for the Vintage cars with Dave Snedeger of Grain Valley in a 1933 Ford Coupe grabbing heat one and Lonnie Farley of Stewartsville with a fantastic turn-four pass for the win in heat race number two in his 1930 Super Mod. Unfortunately at the drop of the green flag many of the Vintage racers found themselves in ominous positions over the turns 3 and 4 embankment. Luckily all the cars involved, seven in total, were able to stay upright with a few of them returning to racing action once the track was cleared of the accident. Brian Strong of Windsor, in his 1933 Ford Coupe brought the field to the green flag but he was unable to hold that position as he spun his machine allowing the #28 machine of Mickie Cook of Amore, MO, in a 1928 Pontiac to inherit the lead. The racers were challenged on the slick racing surface but put on a good race for the fans with battles ensuing behind Cook for the remaining positions. In the end, Cook flew the checkers over Ron Lutes of Basehor, KS, in a 1936 Ford Sedan. Dale Reese of Wellsville, KS, in 1950 Ford was third followed by Strong in fourth, Snedeger fifth and the 1/2 Crazy-numbered machine of John Willard of St. Joseph, MO, in a 1953 Kaiser in sixth.

Although there were just seven competitors on hand in the 305 Sprints the racing action was as hot as ever as the high-side cushion allowed for some fast and furious action. In the heat race it was Mora’s Randy Roberts picking up his 7th heat race win over Gabe Maycock of Middletown and Harrisonville’s Kenny Potter. Earlier in the week the CMS promoters announced a different line-up for the final two races on the card and the 305s completed the night’s race-card of events with an exciting race as the dry-slick track challenged all the competitors no matter what line they chose to run. At the drop of the green it was Maycock and Roberts who set sail from the rest of the field until Roberts spun coming out of turn 4 with smoke and flame bellowing from his #1 Lasoski/Stewart Motorsports-sponsored car. Roberts was unable to continue on in the event and on the restart Maycock now had company from a high line-driving and charging Michael Brown of Kingsville. Brown would pull close to Maycock at times but in the end the Middletown native took his 8th A-main event of the year; more than any other driver at CMS track this year. Brown came home second with Terry Moore of Grain Valley finishing third. Will Pierce of Lee’s Summit come in 4th with a last-lap pass on Austin Alumbaugh who was 5th, with Kenny Potter rounding out the top six.

Once again a full field of Mighty Modifieds was on hand proving yet again that there is no other modified racing action as competitive as the CMS contingent anywhere else in the Midwest. It took five heat races and two B-main events to sort out the 25-car starting field for the A-main event. Heat race winners were Concordia’s Alan Deatherage, Lone Jack’s Chad Lyle, Kansas City’s Bobby Layne, Jesse Wheeler of Independence and Dennis Walrath of Clinton. The two B-mains were won by Oak Grove’s ‘Chargin’ Charlie Ebert and Harrisonville’s ‘Smokin’ Joe Walker. Along with the top four in each heat race and top two in the B-mains, Chad Stauss received the provisional to the A-main event to complete the field of 25. At the start it was Deatherage and Lyle who took the field into turn one for a fast-paced race up until lap 17. Lyle pulled away early on the rest of the field leaving Deatherage in the clutches of Wheeler, Walrath and Bobby Layne for second. Unfortunately Deatherage’s bad luck continued as mechanical woes saw him pull to the infield, done for the night. By lap five Bobby Layne was now in second position bringing Wheeler and Walrath along for the ride in third and fourth. As Lyle stretched his lead it was point’s leader Gary Blackburn, Jr., of Fulton who began a solid run from his 10th-place starting spot who was now on the charge to the front as he passed Bobby Layne for second by lap 16. On lap 17 a crash in turns one and two involving last week’s main event winner Jimmy Dowell, Walker and Kyle and Westerhold brought out a late-race caution and bunched up the field for an exciting finish. Blackburn was separated on the restart from Lyle by a couple of lapped cars but it didn’t take him long to try and mount a charge on Lyle for the win. In the end, once again Chad ‘The Gator” Lyle was simply too strong for the rest of the field and took his third A-main event win of the year. Blackburn was second with Bobby Layne third, Lee Hibner of Chillicothe fourth, Dennis Walrath fifth and Warrensburg’s James McMillin in sixth.
