By DAWN THOMPSON, Messenger staff writer (2 June 2008)

Larry James Doocy, 60, of Fort Dodge, has been identified as the man fatally injured during the weekly races at Mineral City Speedway Friday night.

Doocy’s name was not immediately released after the accident pending notification of family members. A message left for officials Sunday for further information was not returned.

According to reports with the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, Doocy was acting as a crew member during the races at Mineral City Speedway when he was struck by a wheel that had broken off a race car making a lap around the track. The wheel crossed the track, entered the pits at a high rate of speed and went through a group of trailers before striking Doocy.

Rescue personnel at the track attended Doocy until he could be transported to Trinity Regional Medical Center. Doocy reportedly died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Bancroft with a scripture prayer service beginning at 4 p.m. A funeral mass for Doocy, who was formerly of Lone Rock, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Bancroft. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Lone Rock American Legion.
