Transponders and costs!

This is what Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway is doing as they implement transponders this year.

PPMS has finalized the installation and purchased the equipment to do AMB electronic scoring in 2010. AMB scoring will also allow competitors to have access to a program to get all their lap times. This will require all teams to have a transponder mounted in a designated area on their car (see rule book) starting with opening day. As we did with Raceceivers, Miley Motor Sports and AMB have worked together to set up a lease to purchase program for competitors to take advantage of if they wish to do so. Teams also have the option to buy the transponder outright at a discounted price. Several competitors may already own one from racing at other tracks requiring AMB units. In that case the race team will just register their AMB unit with PPMS.

The purchase price for the rechargeable unit will be $428, which will include tax and shipping or the unit can be leased to buy for $58 an event, for 8 events making the total cost $464. Rentals will be available for the occasional competitor for $25 an event but money will not go towards purchase. The trophy classes only, will be able to do a lease to own plan for $29 an event for 16 events, making the cost $464. AMB Units should be available for purchase at Miley Truck Rental in Carnegie by Thursday March 11, 2010. Credit cards can be accepted only at Miley Truck Rental currently.

While having an initial cost, transponder scoring along with RACEceiver communication has proven to save money for all race teams over the course of the season. The two systems allow for quicker realignment of the races saving in gas and other mechanical costs on the cars, as well as better warning to the race teams to avoid on-track incidents.

We have one for our kart racing. If ya got to use them go ahead and fork out the bucks. We thought we would only be racing for a year or so and rented one. Now 5 years later we could have bought 3 of them so we finaly bought one. Yes the 1st hit on the cost is hard to eat but NOT paying to rent one every weekend is well worth the cost. Now on there web site you can buy the onboard display g2 and yes it is way over priced but look at all the cool things it can do like your position in the race (so you can't wine about where you are put) :) how far the guy is in front or back of you. Lap times and rpm's not to say you can go to there web site and see everyones lap times and where they finshed race by race. Every track should have the system. It truly (when ran by someone that knows how) can make a race day go by fast and smooth. www.mylaps.com

We use AMB transponders in our RC cars, and just for those little ones to run in our 10th scale cars is about $120 a pop. They work great though
